IF the Bible had been written by man alone and wasn't the word of God....
The Old Testament would have promoted sex.
The New Testament would have been about the birth of beer
and Revelations about women (in particular, the wife).
Now that I've ignited a flame of discontent with some of you, let me explain. A lot of people like to say that the Bible was only written by man. But if that were true WHY in bloody hell doesn't it incorporate some of the basic wants of man? I don't think I'm terribly off to assume that sex is one of the first thought priorities of any man. If, as some claim, there was no God and all of these ancient writings just written by men, then what is there to accomplish by limiting the very things that most men desire?
And I'm not assigning each area because I believe any of it, but if you think about it why would man create something that doesn't have his wants listed first?
And if you mention power or control, be specific in your response.

PS - I'm not trying to insult any females with this question.
And I do realize it sounds silly. But you should hear the things I think sound silly.

JT, I have read the Bible and said I'm not assigning anything to a specific area, but really trying to understand why people even think that it wasn't written by God.
You say that the Bible is mythology or deeming it not to be true. Fine. Then I challenge you to prove to me that it is mythology. When you're done I'm sure you'll find your view on it completely different.

Thank you to the people who are understanding the question correctly. I am NOT disputing the Bible, not one bit. I believe in God and Jesus and that the Bible is the Word of God.
I am not trying to insult the Bible at all. What I am trying to do is ASK THOSE WHO THINK THE BIBLE WAS ONLY WRITTEN BY MAN to explain why.
I know that sex was talked about a lot in the Bible! And I know how long beer has been around too (Eek, I've worked in a brewery before.). Like I said, I WASN'T SAYING THAT THE OT NEEDED TO TALK ABOUT SEX OR THAT THE NT NEEDED TO TALK ABOUT BEER OR THAT WOMEN WERE HORRIFIC. Please use Yahoo! reference to look up sarcasm and digest it before you assume I mean something else!! Thanks!

JT - If you are going to throw out at me that just because Exodus hasn't been found yet in Egyptian heiroglphics doesn't mean it is true, then I say your base is very thin. Just like today, we are not interested in leaving a permanent record to our existence. If a catostrophic even occurred that wiped out all the human race but 1,000 and those eventually repopulated the Earth, then how would they "prove" our culture and existence? We interpret things the way we want to based on a scant bit of evidence that you might use to assume the Bible isn't fact. Just because Noah's ark has never been found doesn't mean it exists. Don't you think he might have needed fire wood? Or perhaps he said to himself, "gee, I need to keep this here so people thousands of years from now can find it and believe." Hardly.

I guess I'm not sure which Bible you're talking about. If it's the Judaeo Holy Bible it mentions all of man's vices and excesses throughout. So that negates your question or contention. Do I really need to fill this post with a slew of quotes?
So let me get this straight. Are you saying that because it can't be proven that the Bible isn't true, it must be true??? This is woefully faulted logic. Think about it.
If I told you the Earth's core was made of caramel, then asked you to prove me wrong, what would your reaction be? Of course you'd brush me off as a joker or a nut case. But can you prove it? Nope.
Unrealistic contentions do not become fact and are not validated simply because they aren't proved false. The burden of proof lies with the claimant.

You are right, if the Bible was written by MEN, then why is it so hard on the "sexually immoral"? And why does Jesus seem to equate sexual fantasies about someone that you never touch as the equivalent of cheating (Matthew 5:27)? What MAN would have said that!?!?!?
If Christianity is so sexist and oppressive toward women, I wonder why the majority of practicing committed Christians are always female, not male (Christian men who are devoted to their faith are in the minority in almost any given church. Ask the pastor.).
I don't know if this answers your question or not, and I've posted in in response to other questions on this site asking why do I believe, but I think that it is relevant to your assertion, so I will repeat it here.
One of the main reasons that I believe in Christianity is that the people who knew Jesus were willing to be tortured to death rather than change their story that they saw Jesus return from the dead.
If the apostles were lying about seeing the resurrected Christ, then why didn't they take back their story when they were individually being tortured to death? Every one of the apostles (Except John, who died a natural death in exile on Patmos), were killed for their faith. Wouldn't a liar recant this story to save his own life?
What did the apostles have to gain by making it all up? What good does fame or power do for a dead person?
I accept the apostles' story because the witnesses were creditable.
PS: BTW, I heard the crack about the suicide bombers; however, the difference between the suicide bombers & the Apostles is that the suicide bombers are not eye-witnesses to anything (they didn't meet Muhammad personally), and they are killing innocent people (others) for their faith, not suffering themselves for it.

You bring up an interesting point. I believe that the Bible was written by a group of fanatics who loved to have control over people(like the Vatican or something). Have you not heard what the Catholic church did to women in the past? That is not what God would want. Pain and suffering seems to be behind the Catholic churches (and I am not even going to talk about the children who were molested!!! Did God want that too?) And it is not just the Catholic church; there is something defective about any religion. I have personal experience with how awful things can get when people become obsessed with religion. Religion represents love, faith and hope. Some people forget that and turn it into a war zone over who is going to control whom. That is just ridiculous and very sad.

The Old Testament would have promoted sex.
Read "Song of Solomon" or "Song of Songs" in the old Testament. Its all about lovers and thier praises. Its not super specific like you're a sexy hot babe, but it does say things like.
How handsome you are, my lover!
Oh, how charming!
And our bed is verdant.
2.) Beer was invented thousands of years before the New Testament, however it was not mass produced, canned, bottled, or even filtered for that matter. It was just fermented grain or honey in water.
3.) I'm sorry you feel that way about women.
There is no limit to your sexual conquest..all the Bible asks is that you do it with your wife. Thats not that extremely difficult or anything. Find someone you love, marry them and get freaky all you want.
I do understand that if God said "hey, just do whatever you want that makes you feel good with no remorse, moral standard, or consequences and you'll be fine" a lot of people would be like "Hellz Yah Party Down!" but thats just not the way it is.

You have obviously never actually read the bible.
The bible is a book of mythology compiled in 325 CE by a council commissioned by a pagan Roman Emperor. The primary topic of the Old Testament is sex, war and greed.
Response:
On the contrary, I do not need to waste my time proving the bible is mythology. It is obviously mythology as evidenced by the fact no valid historically accurate evidence supports any of the bible stories.
Unless, of course, you claim that the fact Egypt exists is proof the bible myths are factual. In which case, you must also believe any fiction novel based on actual locations must likewise be historically accurate.

Well one of the 1st stories in the bible "Go forth and be fruitful" which is God telling people to go make more people.
Also you are leaving out some important information. The Bible was a collection of mens' writings that was voted on and argued over and finally put together by the Council of Niccia headed by Emperor Constantine to make Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire.
So We have only a fraction of what was truly written. All gospels and stories are from MEN and none are actual writings from God itself. Closest Bible comes to have writings from God are the 10 Commandments which Moses brought after going up to Mountain ALONE FOR MANY DAYS to get them (as evidenced by people waiting so long they decided to make a golden calf and setup a big feast for the calf in meantime).

Sex is frequently addressed in the Bible. Men and women are admonished to be as one. They are told to not deny each other, except by mutual consent. Men are instructed to love their wives and let the wife's breasts (whole body) satisfy the husband.
Codes of conduct are also extensive in the Bible.
Numerous passages, especially in Proverbs, discuss the nature of a good and bad husband & father and good and bad wife & mother. A good woman is to be treasured above pearls & jewels. A husband, in order for his own prayers to be answered, must treat his wife with dignity and respect.
As for drinking, Jesus didn't turn the water at the wedding feast into Tang. He turned it into wine. The Bible has extensive prohibitions on getting drunk (with 2 proverbs telling people to get drunk) and much information about the proper consumption of wine and strong drink. Beer, the drink made from grain products, is never mentioned pro or con in the Bible, despite its existence during the time of Moses.
The strong drink referred to is likely wine which is undiluted (most wine was drank mixed with water) or wine which had the alcohol content raised by freezing out the water

Philosophers of the time did not only thing of a mans wants or needs. That is why the old testament does not promote sex; the new testament about the birth of beer ( it was already around before this, anyway); and revelations about women.

What I gather from your point is that if men invented God, why did they limit us and themselves so much by promoting discipline and self-control?
They must have had a good reason....burning bush, angelic appearances, miracles, life of a man who fulfilled hundreds of prophesies......
----------------
Something to note, the Old Testament was written and compiled over thousands of years. Around 100 years before Christ (BC or BCE, "Before Common Era") it was translated into Greek, the common language of the time. No objective source would say that the Old Tesatment--including its prophesies--was written or compiled after this time.
