She goes in for her operation on Wednesday at 8:30am. The vet says she should be done whilst in heat. Will she know what has been done to her?

The vet recommended spaying during heat as she will be 'LOOSE' internally. Thus making it easier to do perform the operation. I don't want to leave it as there is a high population of dogs in my area and I do not want them jumping fences to get to her. She is being done by Celia Hammond Animal Trust.

Making enquiries into timing as suggested.

Not really she will be asleep for the surgery and after she will be groggy.
Be sure to follow the vets instructions for after care. She will need to be kept quiet and not run all over as it will take longer to heal if you allow her to play to rough.
You have done a nice thing for you pet. You are lowering her risk of cancer and she will be a better pet and you will not have to go through her heat cycles all the time.

Agree with all those querying the timing - I've had five bitches spayed and they've all been done three months after their last heat. This seems to be accepted practice so I think you should definitely find out more about why your vet recommends otherwise, get a second opinion from another vet if possible, and CANCEL WEDNESDAY'S APPOINTMENT. You can always wait until her next heat with no worries of unwanted pregancy in the meantime. If not, you have even less time to wait and less to worry about, so it's a win-win situation.
None of my dogs were in the slightest bit bothered by the operation apart from being a bit sore and groggy the next day and very disgruntled that they had to spend ten days on the lead until the stitches healed.
You are definitely doing the right thing having your ***** spayed if you don't plan to breed from her. There are far too many unwanted puppies around already without adding more.
(How bizarre that ***** is automatically blanked out but bitches isn't!)

why did the vet say that? wow, is she gonna have problems after the op. The best time to spay a b i t c h is smack bang in the middle of her seasons when her hormones are settled. What stupid vet said that???they need a proper license. No respectable vet would give that advice unless they are trying to make money from an ignorant owner. Always get a second opinion!
she will notice the stitching and the pain, but won't realise she has had her womb removed.

Phone your vet now and ask why they recommend spaying during heat. This is not recommended by most vets and will cause her many problems. Usually b1tches are spayed 3 months after a season (in heat). I have never heard of a vet recommending spaying during heat, so I think you should phone them now and ask them to explain their reasons.
Good Luck.
PS and yes she will know something has happened to her, she will be sore and groggy for a while. Lots of TLC will be called for.

Good for you and your dog! The world doesn't need any more unwanted puppies and you will probably do well together because of this.
She might feel crappy immediately after the surgery but she'll snap out of it soon enough.
Somehow, I get the feeling that you may have misinterpreted your vet's comments about performing the surgery while your girl's in heat.

Unless she is carrying pups she will not know. I had mine done while she was and then she went through a pseudo pregnancy. It is very odd for your vet to what to spay her while she's in heat though. You may want to reconfirm that. When she's in heat the uterus is enlarged and spaying her could cause increased blood loss during surgery and increased change of internal bleeding post-op.

Good choice to spay! However I have to question the timing. Everything I have read has said they CAN be spayed during heat but it is better for the dog if she is not in heat at the time. Please, get a second opinion on that.

Put yourself in her position would you like to have her take you to be doctored, besides most spayed dogs gain too much weight after the op,think again for your dogs sake

Don't know what vet you go to but find another one, vets usually spay a b1tch out of season, RSPCA spay them before their first season so this says that it is better to do in between PLEASE take her to another vet.
