A "full tithe" by definition is one tenth of a person's increase (tithe means tenth). I firmly believe in the promise made in Malachi 3:10-11 (KJV). God asks us to prove him (is He daring us?)- If we pay a full tithe, He dares us to see if he won't bless us... I think this is as near a guarantee for a blessing as I've ever read in the Bible...
He promises to "open the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it." Gee- I could use that kind of help!!!
The passage goes on to say that God will rebuke the devourer- he will not destroy your fruit, your crops won't be lost... in modern terminology, I guess this means that you'll be able to take full advantage of the benefits of your own work.
My husband and I have found that when we don't pay our tithe, there's never enough money- we're pinching pennies till they squeal, and it's still not enough.
But, when we pay a full tithe, somehow, the money last to the end of the month and beyond. We're able to meet ALL our financial obligations- bills, debts, no overdrafting the checking account, etc. and there's money to spare.

I think the tithe is a great thing for families that can afford it. However, the idea that God needs cash is somehow a little odd. I consider all of my charitable giving (well over 20 percent) to be a tithe but not all goes to a church.
If your family needs the money first, use it for your family. It should not feel like an obligation.

If I have money to donate, I donate to the "please don't cancel my car insurance" fund (a.k.a. my insurance company), my "I need a home" fund (a.k.a. my landlord), or the "keep the men in black sunglasses from taking my stuff" fund (my student loans). I find these more worthwhile than the "help the pastor pay for his new yacht" fund.
Actually, I do donate to real charities, not churches. If I'm going to give money to rich people, I'll at least make sure I'm donating to the mathematics department at my alma mater.
People complain about gas prices, but then they skim 10% off of their net incomes just because their preacher says to. That doesn't make sense. People say there is no cost to being Christian, but the Christians try to make you feel guilty if you don't give them thousands of dollars every year. They're worse than telemarketers.
Some Christians believe, erroneously, that God will double their money if they give it to their preacher. Guess what? I can do better than that (much better!) by handing it over to my broker. Saving and investing are lost arts, it seems.
Edit: People believe God gives them more money when they give their money to their pastor because of something called *confirmation bias*. Suddenly, every bit of money you get becomes an excuse to credit God, just so you can feel better about giving your money away. In reality, you would be making 11% more if you didn't tithe.

In my church, we pay 10% of our income every month. To me, it's obedience to something that God has asked of me. I have had months where it didn't seem like we could pay all the bills, that there just wasn't enough to go around, but we have still paid our tithing, and things have happened to make our money go further then we thought. I will never question the law of tithing again. I know that through our obedience that good things will happen, just like with any other gospel docterine. The more we believe it, the more it will help us in our lives.

At a time in my life when I was a student... driving pizza for Dominos... I often found myself short of money for food, electricity.. etc... until I started paying my tithing... for 3 weeks in a row... I would pay my tithing on Sunday... and on Monday evening... I would get in tips the SAME amount of money I gave in tithing... (Monday's had been a "no tip" day prior to this)... and I received more "by name" requests for deliveries... so my weekly totals went up each week until I was making enough to meet my requirements.

I believe that like most things it is an exercise of faith. Tithing when you have plenty of money requires very little faith. Tithing when you are struggling and fearful is a true exercise of faith. We should know that God rewards his faithful. Keep in mind this is from someone who has failed that test before, but I will not fail it again.

Tithing is the bomb! Whenever I pay my tithes I seem to have more money than I can remember. It's like you just find money in places you least expect it.
