What contradictions in the Bible are so great that you can not believe it is real. Taking things out of context and not understanding why they were written is not profe, it's ignorance. I'm not saying compare the Bible to science or anything like that (a.k.a evolution to creationism), just contradictions in the Bible itself. So enlighten me please.

The Bible is the inspired Word of God written by people (both men & women) moved by the Spirit of God. It was written by some 39 different writers over a period of 1500 years. It has survived in its present day form for about 1500 years. The contradictions you speak of are due to misinterpretation and paraphrasing errors at the time of the translation. Most scholars agree that the Latin Vulgate version of the Bible, translated from the original Hebrew and Greek languages is the best and most accurate translation. From the pages of Scripture itself we read 2 Timothy 3:16,17 “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”. God urges us to “‘Come now, and let us reason together” (Isa. 1:18); and “..you will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart” (Jer. 29:3).

People will find ways of taking texts out of context and twisting it to match their thinking.

God's character does not change; His laws do not change. Jesus summed up God's laws this way Matt 22:36-40: "Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."

Truthfully, I have quite a few issues with the Bible in terms of consistency. However, any doubts I have regarding the existence of God have little to do with the Bible. The Bible is a book that was written by men (not women) years after the actual events had occurred. How accurate could it be? I think most rational people can safely assume that the Jonah and the whale story is strictly metaphorical, as well as Noah and the ark (how did he keep termites on board?). Given that, using the Bible as proof of God's existence doesn't show much insight into God's behavior.

If you want to take an interesting class on this, I would strongly recommend a college level class on the philosophy of religion. I took it in college and it actually re-affirmed my faith in God-just the opposite result of what I had anticipated!

Um... in case you missed it... the bible was just a lose collection of notes, papers and letters that was collected together by Pope Constantine... some of the stuff ended up in book called a "Bible" and other stuff was ignored.

Anyone who believes that the Bible was the "work of God" really doesn't understand just WHAT the Bible really IS.... it's a collection of stories written for an unsophisticated people in simple words and metaphors... nothing more.!

AND... anyone who REALLY wants to understand the bible, needs to be able to read it in Hebrew or Aramaic... and NOT in English... because the King James Version has LOTS of errors... or at least that's what the REAL Bible scholars say...

Are you referring contradictions such as the two creations stories and the two different sets of animals taken on the ark? Or are you referring to the contradictions between the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures?

You need to be clear on which you are asking so people can answer fully.

I believe in God in, but I do not believe that the Bible is the exact dictation of God, but a work inspired to man. That is why there are errors, made over thousands of years by many different hands.

I don't believe for other reasons. There are so many religions. How can I tell which is right. Also, people try to verify the Bible by quoting the Bible. That can't work because of course the Bible is going to accept itself and the quote itself must be verified. There are also problems with the way it's interpreted. For example, in Leviticus, God very specifically says that homosexuality is a sin and eating shellfish is a sin. However, only one of those commandments is followed.

Not believing in God has nothing to do with the bible - it is a conclusion arrived at by the overwhelming evidence found when examining and thinking about the world rationally. The bible is wholly irrelevant when considering whether there is a god or not, as are all the other books which purport to be the word of any of the other gods on offer.

An unconditionally loving God, who would allow judgment and punishment, would be a good place to start?

I liked your comment about, Taking things out of context and not understanding why they were written is not proof, it's ignorance.

This is exactly what turned me off about the way many were using the bible.

Picking and choosing unrelated scriptural snippets and then pasting them together in ways that they were never intended to be used. This was actually first pointed out to me by the wife of a minister. If you have never noticed that this is being done to give credence to a lot of bigoted ideas, you can’t be paying too much attention.

Don’t misunderstand I believe in God. It is for this exact reason that I get so angry when bigots skew his word to advance their bigoted agenda.

My God is not a bigot. And I will defend the loving, compassionate, accepting, inclusive reality that He is from any conflicting biblical nonsense, or intentional misinterpretation till my dying breath.
If you actually love God you will do the same.

Love and blessings
Your brother.

Not because of contridictions in the Bible, but contradictions between the Bible and the modern world. The Bible was clearly not the Word of an all-knowing entity, it is the word of someone with a 2000 year old perspective of the world, and 2000 years later, it shows.

but if you want contradictions in the bible, try the Skeptics Annotated Bible:

Let's see..... According to "believers" god is perfection and makes no mistakes. The bible is supposed to be god's words. Therefore, the bible should be perfection.

But if the bible has "contradictions" it becomes a questioned document as to authenticity and perfection.

The bible is either perfect or it's not. None of this cop out stuff like, ".....but that's not what god really meant when he said.....".

Those critical of the bible DO quote it word for word, in context. Critics don't need to misrepresent the bible, only tell the truth, which is more than can be said about christians who take the bible out of context to further their own agendas.

Or do slavery and the lie that "it's ok to hate gays" not ring a bell?
