Actually, consumer reports just did a study on whitening toothpastes. They found that the cheaper brand, Ultrabrite whitening toothpaste worked better than the top brands.

Topol is really good! Expensive but well worth it.
BUT, what I find works by and the best is rinsing your mouth with a 50/50 mix of water and peroxide (and actually just a tad more peroxide than water is better, but not straight peroxide) BEFORE you brush. Swish and rinse a couple of times and don't put too much in your mouth because this stuff REALLY foams up, and when you spit let it sit on your teeth for a few seconds, you'll see it foaming up on the stains and around your gums.
It helps to loosen up the stains, which (obviously) makes them easier to brush away.
If your teeth are really stained and you haven't been using anything so far, you'll probably notice it right away, but either way you'll notice a big difference in a few days, or least I did.
So if you use both you should have great results! Just remember - don't brush harder - THAT is so bad for your tooth enamel.

Colgate Total Plus Whitening...its what I use. Now if you've already got stained teeth (like me) from drinking coffee or soda then you'll what to whiten them first with a whitener like Crest White Strips because toothpaste can only whiten a little. Colgate Total Plus Whitening will help reduce the staining, I personally use it because it prevents new stains from forming because it keeps working even after you've rinsed out your mouth by creating a protective barrier on your teeth. That and it doesn't taste bad. It comes in gel or paste....I like the paste best.

The absolute best toothpaste for coffee drinkers is baking soda and water.
Coffee is acidic and the acid of the coffee will eat away at the enamel of your teeth, leaving stains. Baking soda is alkaline- the chemical opposite of acid. If you use baking soda it will stop the chemical reaction that causes stains. It will balance the Ph in your mouth, preventing tooth stains and bad breath.
Run water over the bristles of your tooth brush and then dip it in baking soda.
I would brush with baking soda in the morning after you drink your coffee. It tastes kind of bad at first but, you'll get used to it. If it is too unpleasant, you can buy peppermint oil and put a drop or two on the baking soda. Baking soda keeps your teeth and mouth clean, preventing tooth decay but you should also use flouride. If you are going the baking soda route, I'd use a flouride mouth wash such as "Act" after you brush or use a flouride tooth paste when you brush in the evening.
"Used in toothpaste, baking soda helps to gently remove stains, whiten teeth, freshen breath, and dissolve plaque" - Wikipedia.org
pH Conc. H+ Example
0 10,000,000 Battery acid Most acidic
1 1,000,000 Hydrochloric acid
2 100,000 Lemon juice
3 10,000 Orange juice
4 1,000 Acid rain
5 100 Black coffee
6 10 Saliva
7 1 Distilled water Neutral
8 0.1 Salt water
9 0.01 Baking soda
10 0.001 Milk of magnesia
11 0.0001 Ammonia solution
12 0.00001 Soapy water
13 0.000001 Oven cleaner
14 0.0000001 Liquid drain cleaner Most alkaline
http://www.gesource.ac.uk/ph-scale.html
The Ph scale shows coffee as being 2 points lower than neutral and baking soda being 2 points higher than neutral.

I am such a coffee addict I don't use a spoon anymore, lol. Honestly, I just poor it in from the jar, about tablespoon per cup now. My twin made a joke the other day saying anybody who wants a coffee would only need one a month if came here because it's syrup. He couldn't drink it, lol
And I drink black coffee, even worse.
The best toothpaste I've found is rather pricey but it's good
Rembrandt Plus...8 pounds almost in England but it's damn good and for the coffee freak I am I need it :D:D:D

I'm a coffee drinker myself too, but dont seem to suffer from the stains. My teeth have been white. (Just lucky i guess)
But i can tell u what to use still regardless. Try using Listerine Whitening pre-rinse mouth wash. It helps whiten ur teeth and is one of the safest ways to do so. When brushing go for Colgate Total plus whitening. Both of those help keep my teeth clean.

I drink coffee and smoke, and most toothpastes with the whitening ingredient will help, especially if you're a moderate coffee drinker. What will really help are using the special products like whitening strips, gels, etc. every few months (or as directed) and visiting the dentist for your regular dental and hygiene visit. If you can afford it, most dentists offer a special whitening procedure as well, but its not usually covered on most dental plans.
