a person can definitely take a decision alone but depends on what sort of a decision it is. a simple one can be taken alone but for any major one, its better to take another opinion from someone who has experience & definately your well being in mind. if parents want someone to do medicine & that person is more interested in engineering, u can well imagine what a reluctant doctor that person shall be. as a profession one should always choose something one enjoys doing. job satisfaction & enjoying one's chosen field is most important.
maybe its better to sit down with parents & explain why the individual is interested in doing engineering & not medicine. am sure they will understand. if heart is not in a course then its impossible for the individual to enjoy it. its a big compromise. then its again a decision to be taken whether one wants to lead a life of compromise or of choice.
life is full of decisions, some minor & some major!

There are no agurantees in any decision taken by you or your parents...whether it is studis or marriage or any big decision of life...if your parents take a decision and it turns out bad then they will be held responsible for it but if you atke a bad decision then it will be completely your responsibility and you will have to face the brunt of it all...you will be answerable to everyone and might have to face opposition from your parents and family....if you think you are happier with your decision and if you believe in your dreams then go for it but be prepared to face the repurcussions...

You are a cute girl and your decisions should also be quite cute. Course should definitely be according to aptitude of student which will enable him/her to show better performance and job satisfaction in career but definitely support from parents from very beginning will be added plus point and desirable.
(i) You make up your mind to get admission in engg. courses
(ii) try your level best to convince your parents and seek their support and blessings
(iii) In case you are not able to get the consent in advance, they will support you later on. Parents always want welfare and happiness of children.
(iv) Over and above seek god's blessings for both ( admission - parents consent).
Best of LUCK

I think it depends on how your feel about yourself. I have made many, many decisions on my own, but then I may even be older than your parents are. If you are unsure, maybe ask for help. If you think you can live with your own choice, MAKE IT !!!!
