I recently noticed my 1 y/o German Shepherd Puppy has really dry skin on his elbows and some areas of his belly. He itches it also. Can you suggest something to clear it up? Did you have a similar problem? If so, what was it and how was it cured? Thanks for your help:-)

There are many products out there that you add to the food. Treating dry skin needs to be done from the inside out. There are derm caps and liquid, as well as many others. You can also use vegetable oil. Start out with a tablespoon and increase as time goes by. Give what your dog can tolerate without causing loose stool. No more than 3 tablespoons. There are also some good shampoos for immediate, temporary relief. Oatmeal and aloe is a good one. Stop by your vets and see what they have then go to Wal-Mart and try to find the same ingredients in something cheaper. Have worked for a vet for over 20 years I can honestly tell you that you can find similar products that don't have a 100%+ markup.

Try adding some form of liquid oil to your pets diet.
They make several and they can be purchased at any pet store.
Linatone is one. They are high in Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids and those are good for skin.
Less baths. When you do bathe use a shampoo made for dogs with dry skin.

I had a lhaso Apso with horrible dry skin. The vet told me to give him a bath using Aveno Oatmeal bath Soak. To Pour it over his skin and let him soak in it. Also a dry skin deep conditioner or leave in conditioner for dogs. Try vaseline on his elbows and belly. Doctors recommend this for human skin so why not try it on your animal. I dont think it would hurt.

Look in the web for dog skin problems. I usually give all my dogs
one raw egg with his meal at least once a month. They say it
keeps the skin healthy.

The dry skin on the elbo is normal, try just washing it with warm soapy water. It could be a tick bite.

I would start giving him vitamins. For my Pom, I use Emu shampoo, which is really good for dry flaky skin also. I love it and you can get it at just about any pet store.
