I mean, on a massive scale. There can't be lots of little men sitting around pulling them apart can there? But if it's done by a machine how do they keep the whole prawn intact. . . it's keeping me awake at night.

actually, i heard that a lot of shrimps that are fished in the Dutch part of the North see, are shipped to a low wage country in northern Africa to have them shelled and then shipped to the Netherlands again to sell them. So also for prawns it is very well possible that lots of little men (and women!) are sitting around pulling them apart in another country in order to ship them to your country to sell them ready shelled...

Prawns are best shelled after cooking, most prawns you buy pre-cooked are shell on. Otherwise, yes it is done by hand.

Godd questions. I would think they have to do it by hand. You do not see many shelled and divined prawns.

A machine will do it and some will even count the weight.
