a) There is no perfect number, it's more in interests and personality that play a factor, but if you're talking about most SUCCESSFUL age gap then I say no more than 3-4 years
b) siblings... it depends on if the parents can handle two small kids or teenagers, so maybe a kid and a baby, but not a teen and a baby because... reasons that are too lengthy to explain.

My husband is 15 years older then I am. we have a lovely life and he takes total care of me. We are now up in age and have been together for 35 years. I married my husband when I was 19. We have two very productive kids.

I think it just depends on the individuals involved. I was married to someone 5 yrs older. ... we're divorced. next b/f was 10 yrs older.... my b/f now is 18 yrs older. Too much competition w/ the younger ones.
My kids are 14 months apart. They're each others best friends & are now just about to turn 9 & 10.

Did you know that if the father is 20 years older than the mother and they have children, 9/10 of their children are extremly gifted. This is true, ask around..
