My boss is very penecostal, which i have always resepcted and admired. But this morning we were having our usual monday talk and I was telling him how my finacee's grandma is a minister and is preforming our wedding ceremony. He says "SHE?" Then proceeds to pull out a bible type book with a passage he had highlighted, it was stating how a preacher must be. And in the passage only said he never she. He said people dont like that but what this says about men and women is the way it is supposed to be. I bit my tongue because I dont know enough about the bible to prove a valid point and I didnt want to create friction. But I would like someone to explain to me how this could possibly be right. If that is true then i would lose faith in God and his ways but fortunatly I have more faith in God then that and I just dont think that is something that he would frown upon.

Remind him that the first leader of the Israelites was Deborah.

Hebraic tradition has the wife as the one who leads the Sader.

Many people forget that the Bible is not just a list of rules ,although there are list of rules in it. i.e. the Ten Commandments. The Book is also a historical account of the israelites including their mistakes and errors, most of which were cultural norms of the time like sexism.

I am sure your boss thinks God is male. In proverbs 3:13-18 it is clear that the attributes of wisdom and knowledge are female. All translations of the bible use the feminine.

God is a God of justice and equality. Sexism is abusive and opressive. Many a God fearer is going to have to answer for the blaspemy of spouting abuse and inflicting opression in the name of the God of freedom and Salvation.

The whole bible shows who God is and what God believes i.e. love, forgivness, inclusion etc. through the stories of the Isralites/Hebrews getting it wrong and becomming detail focused not concept focussed.

I do not mean to offend but to state the truth. If your boss was around in Jesus' time he would have been a Pharisee and would have been chanting Crucify Him. Jesus stood up against the minutia rulling leaders and valued averyone, the leper, the invalid, the whore, the gentile, the tax collector, the theif. Those were Jesus' friends and the ones Jesus called to ministry not the mighty righteous males of priviledge.

I have no doubt that your fiancee's Grandma is an anointed minister of God through Christ and you should be proud that she is performing the cermony.

Yes your Grandma can preform a wedding ceremony. Women can be Ministers, women can be Preachers and women can be Deacons. The only thing women can not do is be a Pastor because God's Word says the Pastor has to be the husband of one wife and a woman is not to have authority over men 1 Tim 2:12

The whole antiwoman thing came about because Jews during Biblical times were very masculinist. Women were second class citizens. As for the Bible, Peter was very antiwoman, and so was Paul. Paul, especially, said that he felt that a good Christian should never marry since that would take away from doing Christ's work. Did he never stop to think that if that happened, all Christians would be gone in a generation since there would be no new Christians born? From that, several groups of so called Christians say that women cannot be ministers and that a woman's only job is to have children and do as men say. Can we say welcome to the 16th century?

This is true- Man and women have different roles in the world- that is why we are so diffrent. The womens lib movement is trying very hard to change this- but you can't change nature. This may sound trite- but it is a mans job to protect and provide and to lead in righteouness. The woman's job is to nuture and care and be the mother. I would have a hard time with a woman leader of a church. With this being said- a man should never rule the church or the home with an iron fist- abuse is never right. But I do believe that it is God's plan that Man be the leaders of the Church and the women play a supportive role- women should lead youth and childrens groups and womens auxillary groups within the church.

The bible verse that some Christians use to explain why a woman cannot be a priest or minister is:

1 Corinthians 14:34-35

"Women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home, for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church."

First I must say that I don't think this topic is a hill to loose your faith in God on. This is a topic that has been debated for centuries. Different denominations take different stands on this issue. You must decide for yourself how you believe the church "government" should look like. This is really only done by reading the Word yourself and not taking someone else's word or argument as your defense.

The Bible is specific on what God desires in leadership roles for both man and woman. Go to an on-line Bible site and look up scripture about pastors, deacons, wife, husband...keywords that have to do with leadership.

Think about when the Bible was written. At that point in time, women didn't have roles in just about anything (there were very important women in the Bible though, don't get me wrong). So in the Bible, preists were always men, but that doesn't mean that now a woman couldn't be a priest.

The Bible was written by men who feared a women's power. Remind yourself(not your boss) that Jesus was a great friend of women as well as men and having a women marry you is just fine. Frankly I would have preferred that myself but women were still kept " in their place" by men at that time. God may hear a women even more than a man because he gave us the power to bear children. He didn't trust that one to a man, now did HE?

This is not true. There are many women who hold positions in the church including becoming ministers, etc. God calls men AND women to carry out His Word.

Good, keep your faith in the Creator.

The Bible was written BY MEN FOR MEN. Man is not supposed to rule over woman - they should be equal partners. they churches keep talking about roles but think about it - a woman's role is in the home so that she can't become financially independant.
