If a Catholic followed the Jewish custom of placing rocks atop a relative's tombstone, would the Catholic go to Hell?
Is there a different level for almost getting it right?

Placing rocks atop a tombstone is not religion. It is a custom. Religion is the worship of God/Higher power.

Heaven is where the soul experiences the greatest possible pleasure - the feeling of closeness to God. Of course not all souls experience that to the same degree. It's like going to a symphony concert. Some tickets are front-row center; others are back in the bleachers. Where your seat is located is based on the merit of your good deeds - e.g. giving charity, caring for others, prayer.

A second factor in heaven is your understanding of the environment. Just like at the concert, a person can have great seats but no appreciation of what's going on. If a person spends their lifetime elevating the soul and becoming sensitive to spiritual realities , then that will translate into unimaginable pleasure in heaven. On the other hand, if life was all about pizza and football, well, that can get pretty boring for eternity.

All three Abrahamic religions believe in the messiah to save the world from destruction and bring lasting peace. Now would be a great time to pray for the messiah to come before the current wars escalate toward total annihilation.

Cheese, I'm a Christian and feel it depends on why you are doing these practices, and no I don't think that placing stones on a grave will send a person to hell.

In my faith, as long as it is not something that God expressly forbids or that you feel would dishonor God, it would not be wrong. But if it is in worship to another God it would be wrong.

Jesus healed on the sabbath, but that was based on the intent of the reason for doing so. So, in answer to your question, why is the Christian placing stones on the grave? If it's to honor that person, it's not wrong, especially since the Jewish and Christian God are the same. But if it was stones placed on the grave in honor of a different God it would be wrong.

If the ritual gives comfort to the person, it's also appropriate to do.

Depends if placing rocks on anyone's tombstone has any spiritual significance I guess. Rocks mean truth so I'm not sure it means anything. Would you be saying that person was like Peter or "Cephus" the "Rock" and they know the truth about God and the Messiah like Peter did?

I borrow things from all different religions. I just go with what feels right to me or what I feel I need to do. I doubt that there is some penalty for being open to everything. I might just believe that because it makes how I live and believe OK. Who knows?

That doesnt really doesnt matter as long as when it all comes down to it you serve the same God and that you follow the same commandments. There are going to be a lot of people in heaven who when on earth they where different religions. That doesnt matter. Just know that there is only one God and believe that Jesus was the Son of God.

You either follow a particular system of belief in its entirety or you do not. Dogma and legalism and custom will not send you to hell. the only thing that will send you to hell is rejection of Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior. Jesus loves you.

I suppose it depends on whether or not the two beliefs or practices contradict each other. Besides, considering Catholicism has it's roots in Judaism I don't think that particular example would be any problem.

no because God isn't petty... our entrance into heaven isn't dependent on superfluous customs or rules and regulations... and paul says that we should think about whatever is right, pure, lovely, etc... if there is something in the buddhist religion that you think is lovely and pure then go for it... as long as it isn't going AGAINST God then He won't judge you for it... read the last book of the chronicles of narnia- the last battle... C.S. Lewis explains it well...

No, there's nothing wrong with sharing some beliefs, in my opinion whoever put you on Earth wants you to make your own decisions on what you want to do in life.
