while you are hymning in Church...should the parrish fire the Organist for ruining the hymn?
Is bad music a "disservice to the spiritual excellence" of the church?

A lot more here than what you've shared. However, if they are being paid by the church, you have the right as a member to take a complaint to the managing body of your church (we call ours Pastor-Staff/Parish Relations). Bad music is not what you called it but God is certainly worthy of the best we have to offer. If the playing is disruptive to the service, it really needs to end.

If, however, it is a volunteer organist, take the concern to the church Pastor and let them work it out. Volunteers have a heart for God and should never be crushed in areas like this (trust me, I've been there). He/she should still be removed if it is disruptive but if it's just "not great" then leave him/her in place.

Pray first, then follow my lead if you'd like.

If it's an ocassional thing, I would just think that it's a boo-boo, and leave it at that. We all make mistakes, even professionals. If it's something constant, that's disrupting the whole service, maybe talk to your pastor and find out if the organist maybe needs some help. She might want to take a break and doesn't know how to ask. The pastor can then ask her about the sour notes. It's the same way if you get a soloist who "thinks" they can sing (far, far away maybe). No one wants to hurt them, but when they're hurting your ears and making you check out the exit signs, it's time to limit their solos and maybe put them in the choir. While it's good that people want to contribute something to the church body, not everyone is called to do music. And since music is such an integral part of worship, it's very important to do the very best you can, and provide the best that you can. Scripture does say to "make a joyful noise". While what comes out of us surely passes as noisy joy, many people try to ignore the sour notes, because it's the heart that God looks at. So, firing the organist may not always be the best thing to do, but having a talk with them is a start. There could be a real problem here, especially if they've done well up to now. There might be more to this that what everyone here knows too. So, that's just my spin on the matter. <*)))><

A lot of the people are already siging off key anyway and may not even notice. Maybe there is only one organ player in the congergation. At my church they don't pay the organist- it is pretty much all volunteer- so we just deal with what we get.

ha, i love that joke.

and at our church we have a bunch of people from the church sing and stuff. lemme tell you, some of them SUCK. but i think it's the meaning and feeling of the singers that make it okay. so if the organist does it to ruin the song, then yes, he should be fired. if accidental, then he should let it pass.

No. there is a lot of bad music in church. Fortunately for us, thought, we have a merciful God who enjoys our praise and worship of him regardless of the quality of the performance. God looks at the heart, not the talent demonstrated. Jesus loves you.

I guess you don't play an instrument.

All flats can be called sharps at the same time. FYI.

Unless you are in C. there are flats or sharps.

A little education for you.

What kind of stupid question is this? God doesn't care as long as you play to His glory and honor His name.
