Why would you be afraid of your closest friend?

It works like this, Once God had a beautiful idea. God found this idea so lovely so perfect that he did not want to be without it for another second. So He/She thought a part of herself to have enough individuality to see it’s self as a unit as separate as an individual, as you. God did this so that he might have you to love and so that she might have you to love her. God sees you as his perfect creation. What is there to be afraid of in that?

Forget all the shrill nonsense you have heard about a God that wants to punish anyone. This is not religion its fear, an insult to the real loving God.

Ask your heart it still remembers the truth in spite of all the lies you have been told about this foolish little God of vengeance.

Love and blessings.

Your brother Don

To fear the wrath of God for disobeying HIm. God is a good, caring , loving God to all who love and obey and respect Him and accept His son Jesus as their savior. It's no different than if you were raising your own children. You set them up with rules and guide lines so they can grow up to be good honest law abiding citizens. Well God is doing that very same thing, but He is getting us Christians ready for eternal life with Him in His kingdom of Heaven. He does not want anyone with Him that does not want to be with Him of their own free will and complete devotion to Him.

Non believers see it as God being controlling. But you have two choices here. You can either choose to have God control your life, and it be wonderful, or if you don't choose God, you automatically are controlled by satan, and it's hell.

Respect God. After all He created us. Don't fear someone that can kill the body, fear (respect) the One that can destroy your soul.

Think about someone you love and displeasing them greatly. That is the context of the fear.

It means just that. FEAR.
And contrary to what other answers say, the Greek word most used was "phobos" (abject terror, where we get "phobia" from). The Hebrew word, "yare" has just about the same meaning.
In short, if He wanted "respect" it would say "respect." It doesn't. Deal with it.
