Yes. The Christian right has aligned perfectly with the Republican party to take over every aspect of American life. The Democrats have a long way to go to catch up, because they campaign with deceit and fear.
America is, sadly, the most religious of the developed western nations. Until we eliminate religion from society, America will always be full of Talibaptists.

In a sense, yes. In plainer language, they are becoming dupes of Dominionists and Christian Reconstructionalists.
Dominionists have largely usurped the local level political apparatus of the Republican Party, and are engaged in a sub rosa process to politically motivate moderate Christians under the false cover of religious issues such as morality and family values. The goal is nothing less than the takeover of all elective offices in the USA.
Their doctrine comes from the Bible, starting with the term 'dominion' at Genesis 1:28... “And God said unto them, [Adam and Eve] Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have DOMINION… over every living thing.” They interpret DOMINION as: “... a supremacy in determining and directing the actions of others or in governing politically, socially, or personally.”
They want to remake the USA as a theocracy... and they are succeeding.

Atheists and religious people in America both feel oppressed and misunderstood. Fighting prayer in schools and fighting the innocuous "Happy Holiday" greetings, listening to religious invocations in public graduation ceremonies and feeling the frustration of not being able to hear "God bless these graduates" have made both sides in the religion wars feel angry and alienated from the promise of America.
Remember that we all live in the same country. This great country needs us all right now to find our way to peace and security in the war on terror that's consuming the attention of the entire world.

Fundamentalists in America are becoming, or have already become, as mind-wacko as the Islamic psychos. They probably find it frustrating that they aren't allowed to go out and dispose of the non-believers. I wonder how much longer that will be the case.

Baptists only tell you that you're cndemned...
But no, Catholics are here to stay. They'll be here forever, because of the large Hispanic population. Don't worry so much.
