I believe so. I have read books that claim this. But in the Bible, it says that the spirits went into a herd of swine (pigs) and they went over a cliff and drowned. I believe this is in the Bible to show that demons can inhabit animals.

NO! A dog can become mad from a disease ie: rabies, but not possessed by dark spirits.

As animals are intuitive, they can be impressed by low level, uneducated spirit. Possession is a hard description of an impression.
