I will assume that this person died in the US.
Find out what county of what state he died in, and contact the county registrar that keeps track of marraiges and deaths.

Get a copy of the death certificate. There may be info related to next of kin. You can also find out the name of the cemetary, and you can also contact the cemetary to find out who coordinated the final arrangements.

By doing all of this, you can find out where the living relatives are.

Contact the inlaws and relatives and close family friends. His former school should give you where to start.

go to the counties courts. if you know who buried them the funeral home might be able to find. if you know any of the family members any of them would of been the beneficiary and they would have all the records of your friend. good luck
