I was intrested in getting a Papillon. A couple of years ago we lost our Akita and have been cautious to get another dog. I was thinking of getting a Pap but the only concern is, no one would be home to let the dog outside. Crates arn't something we are looking into would it be okay that the pap stayed inside for around 6 hours?

Does anyone know a breeder near New York!?

They are VERY different than an Akita. Kind of wild and yappy.

6 hours is a long time for a young puppy. Maybe get an older puppy or an adult, or hire someone to let her out once a day.

Why would you not crate your puppy? Dogs are den animals and often learn to like their crates. It will keep your pup (and your house) safe and help with potty training. I would never sell a puppy to someone who would leave the pup loose in the house when they are gone. That is irresponsible and dangerous for the puppy.

A puppy can't be alone for 6 hours, especially if you get them at around 8 weeks old (the age a lot of small-dog breeders like to sell them). Plus little dogs have little bladders :). You're also going to want to have some way of confining the puppy to keep him out of your stuff and away from baby dangers like electrical cords, the strings for pulling curtains/blinds, anything on the lower levels in your kitchen, etc. The crate method actually works really well, plus it gives your baby a place to call his own, somewhere to go when he's sleepy or stressed.

The way to really decide if a papillon is the right breed is to research it. Check out the akc website (www.akc.org), go to the bookstore and pick up a book about them, and talk with a few breeders about the pros/cons of the breed. Good luck!

You should know that Pap aren't calm as Akita; they are pretty hyper. I know you might think Akita barks a lot, well, while till you hear the high pitch bark of Pap. I am not saying that they are not adorable, I am just saying that they are REALLY different from Akita. That said, I am sure you can paper train your Pap since they are not dumb. What I would worry about is that if you don't give your pap enough chew toy to relief stress, he/she will destroy every last thing in your house with his/her amazingly strong but tiny teeth.

Right now we have 2 paps and we've had 4 in the past. They need alot of room to run and play. Even though they are toy dogs, they have a hunter mentality. They like rooting around in the grass and mine have caught a few mice, rats, and even a rabbit. They don't like to sit around on everyone's laps or be in crates. Papillons are very active dogs.
