I am not sure what the custom of naming at the time would be. If he had a surname, it would I guess be the same as Joseph. However, many times people would have a name based on location, like the disciple that took Jesus off of the Cross being Joseph of Arimathea. By that naming convention, Jesus is Jesus of Nazareth.

Jesus is a variant name that comes from Joshua. Jesus in Hebrew means "Jehovah is salvation", it was a statement of who Jesus is. Most of their names were like Jesus, the son of Joseph etc. In most cultures names were added with titles like John the carpenter when becomes John Carpenter. Some titles were made shorter or changed like Wayne is French for Wagon Maker.

I think 'bettierage' has a good answer. The bible notes that He was called "Messiah". So Christ [I think anointed is closer than appointed, as you suggest] may be quite close to a surname after all.

People at that time were usually identified by their first name and the name of the place where they were born, so Jesus' surname was Nazarene.

im not sure about this but during those times, the surnames were the names of their father.
jesus, son of joseph. (and for Christians, son of God)
david, son of solomon.
john, son of zechariah.
remember that the use of surnames was of roman influence. this was imposed by the people who were propagating the catholic religion. before these times, there were no surnames.
Even Ancient Greek and roman literatures prove this.
hercules, son of zeus. telemachus, son of odysseus.
for more proof, how about the lord of the rings?

Jesus Josephson???.
Jesus the Fake, or Jesus Le- Faux, because he wasn't real,
some call him Jesus Plastique because he was false,
some call him Jesus Themyth, because he was mythical and not real.

He didn't have one. Funny you should ask because the apostle Peter was actually Simon Peter. Peter was his surname.
