Hi there,
I am ashamed to say that I have not yet been patisserie hunting in my eight years here, despite my interest. That being said, the two that have been on my list forever are Payard Patisserie (Upper East Side) and La Bergamote (Chelsea). Both are well regarded in the press and "user" reviews. I know Vieniero's gets the press for Italian pastries, but technically it's not a patisserie.

I just got back from San Francisco, and I'm sad to say that there isn't a patisserie here in New York, comparable to 'Bay Bread Boulangerie' in San Francisco.
However, one I can think of on the top of my head is La Bergamote (It's my mom's favorite place). The fruit tarts are made from the best quality ingredients and the freshest fruit, for a very reasonable price ($4 a tart). I like the tangerine fruit tart. Also try the chocolate dome thing, but only if you're in the mood for something extremely chocolatey. Payard is comparable to La Bergamote, but not as good, and you'd be spending twice as much. If you want a nice dessert bar, Chikalicious is very creative, but it's always so damn packed! OH WAIT! i just remembered, Blackhound is divine! You have to try the three-chocolate (dark, milk, white) cake. It's amazing! If you're up for a 3-hour drive, Pastiche in Providence, Rhode Island, has the best fruit tarts..ever. If you go and don't agree, I'll be happy to compensate your gas. Okay i'm lying about the gas, but it really is the best.
Don't forget to call for hours before going :)
and one more thing..stay away from the Magnolia Bakery. it's THE most overrated crap in the city, and all of their recipes can be found in their books.
