Wow did you just hit the nail on the head! That is exactly the problem with the Right--as long as its a cluster of cells they want Big Government forcing the woman to give birth to it, but once its a human being its fair game--ship it off to war, poison it with environmental toxins, let it starve to death by stealing its pension and social security and medicare...on and on. Well done!

Society generally tires to kill as few people as possible. But we do kill people, all the time, when some other value or result is deemed more important.

Abortion, war, the death penalty. We make life and death decisions all the time. Hundreds of thousands were incinerated in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but many point out that it saved many times more lives - American and Japanese.

Life is tough. God help us.

PS maybe we should just take all the "unwanted" embryos and pay the women to give birth to them instead of aborting them. Let the neo-cons raise them and pay for them and use them as an army when they grow up. Everyone wins! The "mothers" didn't want them anyway, so no one can complain if they die in war.

I really hope someone here is familiar with Swift's "Modest Proposal."

That means that I am being sarcastic, for those who are not.

A fertilized embryo is a civilian. A war is being waged today against the unborn. Unfortunatley the unborn are not able to protect themselves since the safest place on earth used to be the mothers womb. Now a mother's womb is one of the most dangerous places on earth.
A rose by anyother name would still smell like a rose.
Murder by any other name is still murder.

In my opinion, war has become too bogged down with details of honor and chivalry and such like that. War is kill or be killed. Some of those so called civilians are car bomb toting fanatics. I say if they're stupid enough or careless enough to get in the way, let them die.
Yes, maybe this is a jerk point of view, but seriously, if you want to win a war, you can't worry about offending people or killing the wrong people. Not that I necessarily approve of the atom bomb as a weapon, but you cannot doubt it's usefulness. The 1st one dropped, Japan did not immediately surrendered, the 2nd one dropped 3 days later, They surrendered. FOUR DAYS to end a war that went on for 5 years.

Yes, lots of people died with those bombs, but if you want to win, you gotta do what you gotta do.

I'm not sure why the word "embryos" is being used at all in a question about civilian casualties in war, but ...

... it is morall incumbent on those who wage war to avoid civilian casualties as much as possible. They are obliged to not deliberately harm or kill civilians, and to avoid as much as possible harming them inadvertently.

In other words, they are called to behave better than Hezbollah, which situates itself among civilian populations and all but invites Israel to shoot at them, and thus shoot at the civilians.

In that situation I don't blame civilian deaths on the Israelis. I blame them on Hezbollah.

Civilians should never be a casualty of war. What does their embryonic state have to do with it?

sure, and if they know their country is fighting another, they should evacuate. Just like if a big hurricane is coming, get out of it's way, or take your chances.
