Insurance is very important for many reasons -depends on your life situation:
The basic ones are:
1) Life Insurance - to protect a family's finances when the bread winners die. Some people pay for dependent life insurance, but that is not really that necessary. It's more important to insure the life of the bread winner.
2) Short Term Disability - this protects your income if you are injured/sick for a short period of time and cannot work during that time. It is very useful also for women during their maternity leave.
3) Long Term Disability -- this one is crucial. This kicks in right after the short term disability policy stops paying for an injury or illness. It pays a portion of your salary until you are age 65 or 67 if you are not able to work due to an injury or illness. Everyone working should have this!!
4) Car insurance - this is mandatory in many states. This pays for any car accidents, injuries, etc. you have. It also protects you from any liability issues that come up if you were at fault.
5) Health/Dental Insurance - very important to see the doctor and have treatments in case you become ill. Medical costs are very high, so this insurance helps to control some of these costs - although medical insurance needs to be reformed in the US
6) Trip Insurance - this is needed if you pay a large amount of money to go on vacation, but you need to cancel or lose your luggage, etc. This reimburses some of your costs of the trip should something go wrong.
7) Worker's Comp. This is paid by the employer to protect employees' income and health costs should they be injured while on the job,
8) Home insurance - protects your home should anything happen to it - there are coverages for floods, sink holes, fires, burglaries, hurricanes.. It pays for repairs needed or sometimes pays for a new house...
9) LTC - Long Term Care insurance is to help pay for the cost of nursing homes and nurse assistance when you get older or become invalid. This helps older people get by with their fixed income.
There are many, many other products, but those are the main personal ones.
There are also insurances to protect various properties and businesses and others to protect individuals' assests should they ever be personally sued.
I think some of these coverages are important and everyone should have some of them. You never know what is going to happen.

Insurance is very important especially if you have any type of assets to protect. Depending on what kind of insurance you are speaking about and the amount of assets you have to protect depends on it's level of appropriateness for each type of policy. Auto insurance, Homeowners insurance protect not only liability but your property. I have paid out many a check to people who have lost their home in a fire and they are very grateful to have had the coverage that I provided them.....although at the time they bought the policy they thought they were paying too much when their house burnt down and I showed up with a check to get them a place to stay, clothing.etc they were glad they had made the choice to properly protect themselves.

Yes, insurance is very important. It depends on the coverage you are looking for. Life Insurance so your family can maintain or improve their quality of life, Disability Insurance or Income Insurance, to replace the income from your job if you are unable to work due to a disability or sickness, Medical, pay for the medical costs of staying healthy, etc.... there are many different types of insurance, just depends what coverage you are looking for.

I live without insurance when ever i can. Some laws insist that i take it, so i do ( like, it is illegal to drive without car insurance in Canada )
all insurance, is one of those things in our modern world, like cell phones, diamonds, huge SUV's , iPODS (the list goes on)....that you and I have been taught, sold and been told that we need, but really, we do not.
Insurance guys often use FEAR TACTICS ... like "what if this terrible imaginary thing would happen" ......to make you think u need it.
a blind, deaf & mute woman named Helen keller said this :
"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature. Nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure.
Life is either a daring adventure or it is nothing."

Insurance: If you need it and have it you will say "Glad I have that;" If you need it and don't have it you will say "Damn I wish I had that."
Insurance covers risk, you may or may not need it. The choice is yours. What are YOU willing to RISK?
