Talk to your doc to see if there are other meds that might work better for you.
Most likely you've been taking your meds all this time because the upswings might feel great to you in some ways but cost you meaningful contact with the ppl you care about. In other words, they really aren't so great, you just tend to remember the good about them. Besides, the downs are a pretty big price to pay, and again cost you connection with ppl as well.
I don't swing up, but can tell you from experience that there is absolutely nothing in this world that I would do if the price was swinging down.

DO NOT STOP TAKING YOUR MEDS. My boyfriend is bi-polar. We have been together for almost two years and whenever he stops taking his meds, he goes beserk... he has been arrested for stealing cars, etc... he loses his concentration and ends up in a world of trouble.... maybe you should try therapy where a licensed professional can help you find other ways to have fun...play sports and get those endorphins going....watch funny movies.... I am not sure what kind of people you hang around, but Im sure that if you stopped taking your meds, you would not only hurt yourself, but others around you too (more specifically, your loved ones)...remember: although the highs are great, do you really want to deal with the lows? My boyfriend and I engage in lots of activities to keep him "up" and I know that he misses the times when he gets his highs, but everytime that he stops taking his meds (like now), he life falls into shambles.

I'm bipolar too...the right combination of medication can take a long time to figure out. I got all messed up a couple of years ago because I was on Effexor for depression before it put me in the hospital and then I was diagnosed with bipolar. Right now, I'll be honest, I'm not on any meds. I was taking Lithium and Wellbutrin, but the Wellbutrin wasn't doing anything for the depression side of things. The Lithium helped for my manic moods, but not much. I've done a lot of praying and getting closer with God, and I feel pretty good right now without meds. I'd say talk to your doctor before doing anything, and if you're a praying person, talk to God about it. Good luck :)

I suffer from bipolar type two and at one point I was 11 meds a day. I have been off of meds for about 2 years now and I can honestly tell you that I feel much more stable off of them then while I was on them.
I was in therapy for 7 years and it takes time but now I'm finally at a stable part in my life.
If you are feeling suicidal and or depressed while on your meds then they could be the problem. You should talk to your psychiatrist about either changing meds or slowly getting off of them and trying talk therapy instead.

But the ups are soooooo short, the downs are sooooooooo long. Ask your therapist/physician about other meds if the current one(s) don't seem to be working well. Eeyore rocks.

I am bipolar also, the shrink labeled me "Cyclothymic" which is a lesser form of blown out maniac. I LOVE the high times, at least I'm happy, but the laws are horrible.
Don't stop taking the meds, you could really have big problems then.

Discuss the meds with your psychiatrist. You may need a change of dosages or maybe a different type of a medication.
