Moral standards are never disregarded by the majority of a society. Certainly there are always some who will do what they believe to be wrong, but most people stick to their beliefs almost all of the time.
The problem comes when society shifts its standards. Those who can't change are left behind believing that man is going to hell in a hand basket. But they're wrong. Society keeps on going, parents continue to teach their children to share and not to hit or bite and the world keeps spinning.
We are inherently self-protective. Those values which can lead to our demise are shot down pretty darn quick. But values change, and the world changes. That's why the high-school girls who dress in ways that would have seemed whorish when I was in high school, only look like girls to their peers. And why American women are no longer required by "modesty" to keep their ankles covered at all times.
And all the hand wringing and wailing hasn't stopped such changes yet, nor do I believe it ever will. It's not a matter of moral standards being disregarded, but of some of us not being able to see the genuine goodness of our neighbors because of the color they painted their house. Or their church.
As to the old ladies getting beat up and the sex crimes, those have always happened, but it was fathers beating their children "for their own good" and no one talked about families where granddad was also great granddad. The moral standard being regarded there was, "Keep it behind closed doors."

Good question, you can already see it happening. Look at the incidents where a senior citizen gets beaten up by youths for no apparent reason, look at the things we see on television today, look at all the sex-crimes that we seem to take as par for the course, look at all the other things that indicate low moral values. All these are signals of rapidly expanding moral decay, I truly wish there is something that can be done about it, the only thing I can think of is starting with yourself and thus trying to influence others. If this decay goes on society does not stand a chance.

If moral standards are disregarded, they'll eventually be changed. No big deal. It wouldn't really be the first time that happened.

It will basically cause the very destruction of the human race. If morality is gone, all good is gone, which means that bad or evil will prevail and the world would be doomed as we know it. Guess we're on our way there, at the rate the world is changing everyday.
