Thyroid deficiency can be caused by alot of different things besides iodine deficiency --
it can be genetic, due to nuclear radiation exposure, an autoimmune disease, etc.
According to the cause, hypothyroidism may occur in various populations --Eg:
a) A family -- hereditary
b) More in females - Hashimotos Thyroiditis - an autoimmune disease
c) In Japan - After the Hiroshima Nagasaki incident - due to radiation exposure
d) High altitudes -- deficient iodine
e) Land-locked areas - deficient iodine

Dietary deficiency of iodine is no longer a leading causeof thyroid disease, especially in the developed world. Here are a few populations at high risk of thyroid disease who seem to have dufficient dietary iodine:
1. Cherrnobyl survivors/Belorussia- the radioactive iodine caused their thyroid problems
2. Women. they consume as much iodine as men, but have higher rates of thyroid disease largeley owing to their much greater propensity to Graves disease (8:1)
3. People who get blood tests. "Subclinical hypothyroidism" (TSH 5-10) is a disease of accidental discovery, usually when blood is screened for other purposes. thsi seems to represent a big fraction fo thyroid "disease" but whether is is associated with any problems is unclear. Tha t doesnt stop a lot of doctors from treating as a disease, however, in spitieof the fact that treatmetn has never been shown to reduce morbidity or mortality.

I am hypothyroid, so are both my sisters and so was my mother. Now my daughters are having thyroid symptoms. It is hereditary.
Here are some links with information:

Let me add for you that subclinical hypothyroidism means you should keep an eye on it but don't be too worried. Lot's of people are subclinical. Just means your numbers are very high normal. Oh yeah, high numbers means low thyroid function. It may be years before you actually cross that line to hypothyroid.
