After my ex and I drifted apart I insisted that I can handle what ever was going on with him. I knew that knowing would give me closure and if it was something that I did wrong I could learn from this mistake and move on to the next relationship. I really appreciated him being open and honest. yes it was painful but all I said was "ok " and we went our separate ways no accusations no arguments no sarcastic remarks.

I think that when a man says we cannot handle the truth, he is really just avoiding telling us the truth. Either he is embarrassed, defensive, or afraid of hurting us. In any case what he is really saying is "I can't tell you the truth."

Men assume women can't handle the truth primarily because men wish to avoid an expected emotional response. It's called a prior listening. Because a past reaction to something shared caused some discomfort, the man would like to avoid those feelings of discomfort he expects to feel.
Also, Men are hunt and gather oriented. Men will avoid telling the truth to avoid losing an opportunity to own or pursue.
You were powerful to stand for truthful sharing. Powerful relationships have a depth of sharing. Survival relationships have a minimalist sharing. Which stand will you take for your relationships?

I don't know but Jack Nicholson assumed Tom Cruise couldn't handle the truth...oh wait, that was a movie. Sorry.
As for truthful, some people just can't handle it themselves, so they assume others can't either. This is NOT just a guy phenomenon, though sometimes they use that approach when they are too chicken to say what they feel.

Maybe it was something you could later hurt him with, possibly he was cheating? But, from experience, women can be like this too.
