Bitter Apple spray is great, but if that doesn't work you are looking at seperation anxiety as opposed to boredom. If the dog is willing to hurt himself (IE: chew or scratch to the point of making himself bleed), then you're dealing with an emotional issue, more then just nothing to do.
Get a trainer for Fido to work on the long term issues. Crating is also one way to go, but you don't want to crate him only to find out that he has lost a tooth trying to get out. Leave for small periods of time, like just go outside for 10 minutes, then run to the store, giving a lot of praise when you return. It starts to reassure him that you aren't leaving forever, and you are coming back.

You can try bitter apple, or a similar spray, available at most pet retailers. We have used it with mixed results. The best method to keep our dogs from ruining furniture for us was to confine them to another area of the house. They will usually still find something to eat/ruin, but at least it's not the expensive furniture.

Spray it with a bitter apple spray available at many pet stores. We have a Jack Russel terrier and he did this as a puppy, even eating the WALL! The bitter apple spray worked and even works on plants as well.

Use a crate, or lock it up in the kitchen with a gate, or a utility room, or bathroom.. And take it to obedience training..
Your dog is bored and probably having separation anxiety as well.

get the dog something to chew on while you are gone. Or lock the animal up in a crate when you are not home.

go buy a dog crate and lock it in there when you're gone. most likely he chews because he misses you and he's bored. give him somthing to chew on and leave some music or the tv on

Bitter apple spray will work. Or try to kennel him up or put him in a confined area.
