To become a gourmet you must eat many different types of foods. More than once. For example, you go to a restaurant and order a meal. Chew slowly so that your mouth can absorb the flavors. Think about what you are eating. Can you figure out what ingredients were used to make it? Take notes. Now, next time go to a different restaurant, order the same thing. Repeat what you did at the first restaurant. What does this restaurant do differently? Does it taste the same, better or worse? Why? What did they add to it, or leave out of it? After a while you will begin to develop your palate (sense of taste) and you learn what goes well with what and what doesn't. Talk to the wait staff. Ask them questions. Talk to the chef if you can. If you have cooking shows on television in your area then watch them. Read some books on being a gourmet. You are on your way to becoming a gourmet. Then you can become a critic.
