I was intrigued by this question because I have a massively bizarre crush on Gary Sinise. It all started back when I was 13 and Stephen Kings "The Stand," showed on TV. I was just so in love with him even though there's absolutely nothing attractive about him. So I did a little research, but sorry can't find any info on his heritage! He was born in Illinois. I also found out he's one of the most outspoken conservatives in Hollywood, and I think that may have ended my crush once and for all. Did you see his portrayal of Governor George Wallace in that made for TV movie, though? I forget what it's called. That was really good, though. He's a good actor, and very good at playing that all-American dude thing.
Anyhow, that was completely unhelpful. Good luck!

He is indeed an Italian-American and was the recipient of a special honor by the National Italian-American Foundation.

He was born in Blue Island IL, which is extremely ethnic, but raised in the upper crust town of Highland Park (on the North Shore of Chicago). He went to Highland Park High School and was in his first local theatrical production at the age of 17. He went on to be one of the founding members of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, along with his wife Moira Harris and actor John Malkovich. They had a beautiful anniversary party a couple of years ago as they dedicated their new theatre on the north side of the city.
He did not go the normal college route to hone his acting skills. Instead, his father was a film editor in Chicago and opened a number of doors for him.
BTW, here's info on his grandfather that might help you find out more about his heritage:
