your answer is actually very complex, but typically medical costs are just like any consumer industry. when the supplier has high costs, they are passed to the consumer. most people think doctors are just greedy, but the average doc. who has never had a malpractice suit brought against them generally pays 90000 a year in malpractice insurance. Another problem that leads to higher costs are the costs of treating the uninsured. those are also passed on to those who pay. The third problem is tort litigation. A doctor cannot treat patients without having trial lawyers looking over their shoulder ready to sue. I believe this is the root cause of the problem. All of these things lead to doctors being able to see less patients which create cash flow problems which has a trickle-down effect ALLLL the way down to the medical transcriptionists and billers who got your bill wrong.

i think because they try to sneak fee's on others to make up for the ones that don't pay. I witnessed this myself, when my daughter was in the hospital, they would quite often do stuff to room mate, and put stickers on my daughters billing chart. As a paramedic for 22 years I know what they do. So each time I caught them, and then turned them into Ins. agency to scrutinize everything.

Where ever there is compulsion to believe things blindly, there is a temptation to exploit. Hospitals are no exception, because, there too people come from the same society, all kinds !
