You two are very lucky it was only her tongue. I've seen it go down their throats and pierce the esophagus. It's not pretty. Never throw sticks for your dogs. This kind of thing happens way too often.

Seen a few of these injuries where I work, at a vets and heard of much worse. I haven't seen much worse then splinters and parts of sticks caught in the mouth/gums/soft palate/teeth but sometimes the bleeding can look awful. I have heard of dogs that have had to have major surgery when sticks pierce the wind pipe or food pipe or they run on a stick that has landed end-on in the ground and the stick stabs the dog in the chest/neck.
There is a risk when using any toy with your dog and accidents are just that. I wouldn't necessarily recommend not throwing sticks but there are safer toys that can replace sticks.

A similar thing happened to my dog however it was mainly my fault.
It was the 6th of November 2006 (day after Bonfire Night in the UK) and of course there had been fireworks going off the night before.
Stupidly, instead of going out to check that there was nothing in the garden prior to letting her out, i just let her out in the morning and she picked up a stick which had fallen off a rocket.
Of course i was shouting her back and telling her to come here but she wouldn't and, as you will know, most dogs when they think they have got something really good hold their heads up in the air.
She was trotting round the garden with her head in the air as I was gently following her round to try and get this stick of her and before i knew it, she put her head down and the stick lodged itself in the ground as she was still running forward - it pierced the back of her mouth where the gums meet the inside of their jowls.
She screamed for about ten minutes and it bled for quite some time but after an emergency appointment at the vets she was given some antibiotics and given a jab and the wound cleaned up.
Needless to say we are now so careful about checking the garden each morning before she goes out but, since the accident, she doesn't pick up sticks anymore which in a way i am pleased about.

Happened to my collie a few years ago, never throw sticks now he is happy chasing a frisbee or a ball instead! (He did have a stick shaped dog toy for a while, it was pretty good!)
Hope you have got over your shock, it is horrible when something like that happens, gives you a real fright. Big get well soon hugs to your doggy! Poor girl! Happy toy chasing!

Gamekeepers used to set traps for poachers dogs using a sharpened stick stuck in the ground, the dog would run on to the stick. I've heard of dogs who impale themselves on a stick thrown by the owner.
Never use a tiny ball either. Use a tennis ball if its the right size for your dogs mouth, you can get it to go further with a tennis raquet.

My mom's canines ought to be brushed a minimum of once an afternoon because she sheds like loopy. we've also got here across that brushing her keeps out a number of the pollen and different stuff she drags in from outdoors. yet when your canines likes the lint brush pass for it, i understand some dogs do not favor to be brushed.

Don't be scared to throw sticks to your doggy-she'll have learnt her lesson and the chances of it ever happening again are mathematically tiny..dogs love retrieving sticks!

Dogs have died carry sticks.
they can get they jabbed into their throats or if they have really long sticks and get caught between two trees, that can hurt them too.
