I'd say it's personal. Plus how long you sleep and how much sleep you really need are two different issues. Kids need more sleep than adults because they're growing. Women are said to need more sleep than men. Old people need less sleep than younger people. Depressed people either sleep very much or not at all. If you're sick, same thing.

Research shows that less than 6 hours of sleep/night eventually leads to physical and mental problems, even weight problems, but again, that's generally speaking. I know people who never sleep more than 3-4 h/night and feel just fine.

Most people would need 6-8 hours/night to feel ok. Check out the links.

They don't.

The "average" is 8 hours - that's the mean average. Add together all the numbers, devide by samples.

Sleep is usualy dependant on activity and the past. If one sleeps little one gets used to little sleep. Normally. This is best observed in the medical proffesion and the armed forces.

There's no real average. Anyway. But you can go with 8 :P

8 would be nice but some of us aren't so lucky and work at night and try to wind down on the computer and get about 4 hours which is not suggested. it makes you cranky and its bad for your health
