They most certainly do dress better when single for several reasons - unless they are seeking a new mate.
When single, as in not attached in long term relationship, living together or married - one is seeking a mate - and thus spends money that would have been better spent on buying a house, etc. on attracting a partner.
Once the partner is attained, attention is then turned to the living arrangements for the couple - housing. Housing costs money, thus less money spent on attracting a mate.
The mate will also relax and spend less time and money on same. He will become sloppier both in dress, hair, shaving habits and around the house. Dirty underwear and socks will start appearing everywhere.
Man sometimes will irritate his mate so much that she will begin desiring a different mate. At this time, she will start "going out with the girls", and shopping entire new wardrope (as opposed to the regular necessary updates) until such time that she decides that what she already has really isn't so bad after all, or decides to see if the grass really is greener on the other side.

I think it all depends on the woman. Sometimes when women are in a relationship and they are happy, they try to look good for their man and single women usually always dress good, because you never know who you're going to run into. Sometimes a woman coudl be having a bad "hair" day or they are PMSing in that case, they don't care how they look. I've been there done that. But like I said, it depends on the woman. Hope that helps.

I dress the same all the time. I think it's a mistake women make that once in a relationship they stop keeping themselves up and looking good. I got him and I want to keep him. But mostly I dress for myself, I like looking my best.

I think women dress better both when they are single in order to attract a partner and when they are in the beginning stages of dating in order to keep a partner. After the infatuation wears off and you begin to settle into real life (jobs, kids, house, etc) then usually your dress changes as it competes with other priorities.

men often complain that they marry a fox and find themselves later married to a dog... to put things little too bluntly....
but what these men do NOT seem to understand is that once a woman is married she no longer has the sole responsibility of providing herself with the right makeup, clothes etc....
Suddenly she has to take first her husband and then later her children into account.
When my partner said I do not use makeup as much as I used to I took him along to the makeup counter and asked if he was happy to purchase the required makeup.. I was out of mascara, foundation, and lip liner....
He searched the shelves for barely a second and said....
"But those prices are outrageous! How can anyone afford that?"
I just smiled and said... "Well if you don't think I should buy them... you need to get used to me not wearing them..!"
He now tells me how beautiful I am with or without makeup...

I believe most do... They feel as if they don't need to impress anyone, they have who they want and feel comfortable in their relationship. The only problem is if they let themselves go too much, the man who they are with might lose interest... especially if he maintains his appearance like myself... he will expect his woman to do the same. A man who has high standards in the beginning most likely will not lower his standard later... We should always try to better ourselves especially once in a committed relationship.

Not necessarily but married women, especially moms, often don't have the time to really dress up.

I don't know, I kind of like the sweat pants/T-shirt look in the Fall sitting on the couch watching Notre Dame defeat another team.
