Can't believe AA insurance have shafted us again. My girlfriend had just asked to put me onto her insurance as a named driver and AA insurance charged her for the privilege although she has full comprehensive cover. Around the same time I put her on my RAC insurance as a named driver and they didn't charge us any extra fee.

Six months prior to this she informed AA insurance of our new address which AGAIN she was charged extra for. When she asked for an explanation she was told it all depended on the postcode. We actually moved out from a town where we had to park our cars on the road to a quiet village with a driveway. When I informed RAC insurance of the new address from the same old address I was given a rebate. STRANGE BUT TRUE.

The only thing that has changed is the address. As for differing circumstances my fiance drives a 1.8 and I drive a 1.2 with 2 claims to my name. Both of us have 10+ driving years experience and I get a rebate she gets charged extra for the change of address and naming a driver. I think it is definitely a case of over charging customers. Maybe AA are charging customers everytime someone rings in to make a change on their policy? Has anyone had a rebate recently from them?

I have experienced similar issues with the AA.

I avoid them completely now and told all my friends to do the same. They are CRAP!

Car insurance is a strange thing.
My Mum once asked how much extra it would be to have me on her insurance permanently, and was told that it would actually reduce the cost to add an extra driver!!
It won't cost you more to add your girlfriend to your insurance as she is a better risk than you.

Remember that the AA is a broker, not an insurance company.
They may have chosen to insure your girlfriend with a company that specialises in low cost insurance for low-risk females, based on the facts given when she took out the policy. Adding a male with a poor record will definitely cause that company to charge more. You could ask the AA to re-quote (in which case they'll re-run the search will all the companies they offer), but you'll lose the extra no-claims built up since last renewal if you accept a new quote.

The AA were cheapest for me for a few years. Then I decided to add my girlfriend to my policy, and they couldn't get a decent quote (or keep my NCD protected) - would have doubled the policy cost. Privilege wanted just £30 extra to include her.

Now i am not sure if you are referencing to AAA? or AA? But, each company will have a variation in rates depending on the zip code of where you live. To some companies they will not benefit as well depending on costs of repairs, closeness of a claims office, claims paid out compared to money taken in, etc. So just because one company benefits and the other doesn't just means she was with a company that doesn't benefit you in that area. (I have had clients where the company they were with increased their monthly by $20 a month by moving down the same street but the zip code was different). Secondly on the cost part of you being endorsed on. Insurance companies rates highest risk driver to highest risk vehicle. Therefore, if there is one car on her policy and you become the higher risk driver than her of course your rate will be higher than hers when your on her policy. Same for your policy. If you are the highest risk to them and she is endorsed on the policy will not change because you were the higher risk. If you were referencing to AAA, here in CA at least AAA is the only company so far that has got away from using Zip Codes now as a rating factor as of last week. Sorry for the disturbances but thats how good ol insurance works :)

Every insurance company has the right to set rates based on their criteria. It really does make sense to charge less for someone who drives in a small town and more for someone driving daily in downtown Los Angeles. If you don't like what one company charges, switch.

We've just had our car insurance renewed (and hubby had a new car) and I entered my job title wrongly on their crap website. They charged us £70 to change it! So we cancelled the policy and told them to stick it. We're £70 worse off but 100% reassured - have gone with Direct Line - they were great.
