Any visible change in a mole - coloration or size - is a warning signal for a very treatable but very dangerous cancer: melanoma. If caught promptly, everyone, 100% of the time, survives. If left until Stave III, survival rates can still be as high as 60%. But if left until Stage IV - distant melanoma with multiple metastases - 9-15% of people survive for one year and no one survives for ten.

So if a mole turns black, have it checked out. Your doctor will probably refer you to a dermatologist to have it taken off, because even if it isn't melanoma, the physical cost of having a mole removed is minimal. And if it is melanoma, it's important to catch things early.

Any change in pigmentation of a mole may be indicative of skin cancer. In the case of a mole turning black, it may mean melanoma, a form of skin cancer of the cells that produce the black pigment (melanin) part of everyone's skin. This should be checked out as soon as possible by a doctor, who will likely biopsy the spot in question. It may be nothing after all, but the risk of it being skin cancer is too great to ignore. Usually if it is caught early, melanoma (and other forms of skin cancer) are highly curable.

You need to go to a doctor ASAP. The doctor will probably send you to a specialist that will lance it off. It doesn't hurt. Then they will anylize it and go over the results with you.

It's probably sun damage, but get it checked out by your doctor just to be on the safe side.
