Because they think they can go to church & be forgiven for all the bad things they did all week. It's called being a hypocrite.

Yes, that is often the way it is with human nature but it is a generalization to say that "people ONLY go to church ..."

I go NOW because I want to be there with God and with some of God's people. In fact Sunday has become my favorite day of the week.

It took some very bad things in my life to get me back to church. I had had a several year lapse because my husband wasn't interested in going.

But even more than going to church the best thing for me was to read God's Word from Genesis to Revelation. I am 57 and had wanted to read the whole Bible ever since I was a teenager. But I didn't finally read it until 14 years ago after I got laid off and was going through an unwanted divorce.

I read The Daily Walk Bible and found it to be so good that I couldn't put it down. I actually finished it in 90 days. Now I can look back at the pain and be thankful that it brought me to my knees and to God. I was so amazed that the things people say are in the Bible actually aren't there. While the things the Bible does say are ignored by people who think they know more than an ancient book.

God promises to draw near to those who draw near to Him.

Keep in mind that there is a difference between wanting to KNOW God and wanting to know ABOUT Him.

God bless you as you seek Him!

I have to assume that you are talking about people going to church only when they need help or are afraid of dying.
Because in the United States we have so many conveniences, most people think they do not need God or Church. It's only when the world fails them, that many turn to the church or God. It is unfortunate, but true. If more people knew about The love of God, and the benefits of serving Jesus Christ, I believe we would see more people attending church. It takes you and I to tell them about the truth of God's Word.

Like trying to buy insurance with a hurricane off shore.

One has to wait 30 days, after the storm has passed.
Who needs insurance then?

Because God comforts us and some people look for a temporary fix instead of living their life by the word of God.

No - people get driven from the church by speechifying Christian egotists.
