I used to find it difficult to control what images were formed in my mind's eye. It's not the same as seeing them; it took me years to realise how to concentrate on the image I want to.
You know, the problem on not being able to picture what you read/listen about may not be your fault. Especially when somebody is talking, unless they form the images in _their_ mind, it's very likely that you will not get it. Same with reading. The better the writer, the the more clear the images / transmission of ideas.
And some movies... I mean, I doubt many people could really make out Vanilla Sky before the ending the first time they saw it. Some movies are just meant to be confusing.
My point is, don't assume it's all your fault, and keep trying. It's a skill that is very useful. Try to make images in your mind when you are explaining, or even just thinking about things, and take it from there.

I didn't read for years due to a similar problem.
I found a way that worked for me was reading a book on a TV series I liked then I knew what the characters looked like.
I remember reading Dune because I had seen the film and enjoyed it the book made sense.
I also read a few star trek books because I knew what they looked like and who they were.
I found it a lot easier to set the scene in books I hadn't seen the film or TV series after a while.

Apparently there are two types of people, those who perceive things visually, i.e. a mental image, and those who do so with words and language.
Those who create a mental image are said to be more artist minded!
