The original contract is for 6 years. Normally that's 4 years active duty and 2 years inactive reserves but subject to call up. During the draft, it was 2 years active, 2 years active reserve and 2 years inactive reserve. They are talking about making the military obligation 8 years, though. Not sure how that's going. The American government is also talking about bring the draft back since very few young people are joining the military.

all initial contracts are for 8 years total. This can be divided up up between Active Duty, Reserves, and Inactive Ready Reserve. most AD tours are for 4-6 years. The Army and Navy do have a limited number of 2 year AD commitments.
The more training your job requires, the longer your AD commitment will be.

It depends on what tour length you sign up for when you sign the enlistment paperwork. Talk to a recruiter with your parents if you are interested - don't go alone or make a rush decision. College benefits are excellent but shouldn't be the only reason you go in - not with today's operational environment (deployments). It can be a life changing, fantastic experience but go in with eyes open and sure of the length of time you want to serve - at least for your first tour.

That depends on the job you come in to do. I know here in the Navy, ssome of my enlisted are in on 3 year tours. But the norm is 3 to 4 years.

Generally, the minimum you can initially enlist for is 4 years. They're not going to spend all the money on you to train you, clothe you and feed you, if it's only for 2 years... Check with your local recruiter..

It depends on what you signed on for. If you go into the navy and you want to be on a submarine then you have to be in for 6 years. If you want to get retirement then you have to be in for a minimum of 20 years.
