Apartment, 2 indoor cats, Himalayans, 16-14 yrs old. Older cat requires sub-cutaneous fluids twice weekly. In spring started pooping outside litter box after my wife cleaned litter stuck to paws. 3 alt. places: next to box (under adjacent desk), same room-other end, near front door. Still peeing in box. Why? Fixes? Thanks

Ok, with 2 older cats you should have more litter boxes. But that doesn't really seem to be the case here if he's pooping next to the box. It could possible be a medical condition he's developed in his old age, but hold off on the panic for now. try placing his poop in the box after he goes outside of it and let him sniff the box. Also, you need to completly remove the smell from where he has been going. Use a spray like Simple Solutions for Cats. It works great. If you see him useing the box, praise him with some type of treat he doesn't normally get. I use dried tuna flakes for training and my cat goes nuts for them. Make sure you don't change litter types, most cat's will adjust to the change, but it could confuse an older cat. As for the poop near the front door, a second box MAY help, but don't hold your breath. If none of this works, you may want to schedual a trip to the vet. GL

It could have been the poop on the paws thing, but a lot of cats decide after a few years that they are just not going to share a litter-box with another car. I have the same problem. It seems to happen more often if the box has not been scooped out after they use it. This can cause you to have to scoop several times a day. I finally had to let my cat live outdoors. This same cat put an end to my apartment living real fast. I had to hunt a house with no carpet in order to keep her. Now she is the one who had to move out. Not me again.

Many times when a cat gets old and starts having kidney/liver problems, they start pooping out of box. Not their fault. They are old and sick. My Mom's cats did it but she put up with it b/c she knew their time was limited. You can try adding litter boxes in the areas that they are using.

Since you have two cats, do you have at least two litter boxes? It may help to have at least 2 or 3 litter boxes if you don't already.

have you asked your veterinarian about it? your cat may be suffering from some kind of incontinence. or he might have lost his smell and can no longer find the litter box by it. but that wouldn't explain why he is still peeing in box.... it's kind of strange.
my cat is one year old but she poops out of the litter box each time the box is not clean. so i guess different cats have different reactions.

some people locate that an extra muddle container is the respond. One for each cat, plus an extra one. there is likewise a muddle called "Cat entice" - Petsmart sells it of their shops and on line. this is certain. We moved the previous cat's muddle container right into a thoroughly distinctive region in the residing house and used Cat entice. the recent cat persisted to apply to unique muddle packing boxes and the previous cat loved having her own area and container. purely a tenet. sturdy success

you can try a different type of litter that will not get in its paws or if you don't have seperate litter boxes you can try getting two boxes one for each of them sometimes older cats get picky. i have a tuxedo longhair that won't poo in the box unless it is clean mister priss here lol hope that might help a little.

First vet, check health. Second, change litter? Move box? Other change in house? Cats easily upset.

Your cat is old enough it just could be a sign of old age. Try using puppy training pad in the area where it is pooping, at least clean up will be easier.
