Normal behaviour - Your pup is being very clean. A ***** with puppies will eat the puppies faeces to keep the den and surroundings clean and to clean up what would be an advert to preditors that there are vulnerable youngsters close by. Your pup has learned this behaviour from her mother. Don't punish her or feed her pills or potions for something that is natural behaviour. People are way to quick to punish dogs for simply being dogs. The simple answer is do as good a job as her mother would have done and clean up the faeces immediately. You have noticed that she doesn't eat it when she poos outside. Again natural behaviour faeces far enough away from the sleeping area isnt a danger. Give access to outside more often and when she is completely clean in the house then this behaviour will obviously stop. Conversly if you don't clean up after her quickly and so she feels that she has no alternative but to eat it then this could become a habit for her so make it possible for her to avoid this. You are seeking information which is a great thing - be selective about the advice you choose to follow. There is a lot of bad advice out there due to ignorance as well as good advice from knowledgable people. Your pups wellbeing depends on the action you take and the advice you follow. Kind regards, and have fun with your pup. Kath

PS it seems we have to call bitches - female dogs on yahoo.. how silly and what a sad refection on modern life that a technical and correct term is viewed as an obscenity.

When we got our Pom, we had the same problem. First they said it might be his diet - so we switched his food to something without any fillers and better quality. That didn't stop him, so we bought some pills from Petsmart that can be given to them as a treat. My dog loves them - little does he know what they are. Those seemed to help a lot. I have also heard that a little meat tenderizer in their food or some crushed pineapple will do the trick also. This is definately normal behavior. Puppies see their parents doing it for them, so they pick up the habit too. I don't think it will be a hard one to break though. Trust me, my dog is the most stubborn dog I have ever seen - never listens - and we trained him not to anymore.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://bitly.im/aL130

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Although most people find it repulsive, it is quite natural for dogs, especially puppies to eat feces. (Feces found in kitty's litter box is an especially favorite treat.) Fresh feces closely resemble the first solid food the puppy ate: warm, semi-solid, semi-digested food that mom regurgitated for her pups to eat.
Often this behavior will just go away when the pup matures. In the mean time, keep the pup's toilet area as clean as possible. Be sure that the puppy is checked for worms and other possible problems such as something lacking in the dog's diet. It is a good idea to have the dog's diet approved by your vet, or switch to a nutritionally complete dog food sold by your vet or pet store.

Many owners have had success in stopping this behavior by supplementing their dog's diet with one spoonful of canned pineapple or a teaspoon of spinach. There are products on the market such as 'Forbid' that can also be added to the dog's food to help stop the problem.

If the dog is still fond of feces, try teaching your dog not to touch it using the command 'Off.' Put your dog on leash and walk him by some feces. If he shows any interest in it, tell him, 'No, off.' If he continues to go for it, then loudly scold him, 'OFF!!!' and pull him away from it with a short, sharp tug on the leash. When he stops, praise him. Continue walking and keep returning to different piles of feces over and over, repeating the off procedure until he gets the idea that you disapprove of his dietary interests. Whenever he shows no interest in the feces, be sure to tell him how happy you are through praise and reward.

It is also possible to make the feces unappetizing by sprinkling them with hot sauce, lemon juice or anything the dog finds distasteful. Some dogs like hot sauce and will consider it a garnish, so find out what your dog does not like before using it.

Be sure to clean up your dog's feces immediately after he defecates so as to prevent the problem in the first place. Do not give him the opportunity to indulge himself.

that's pretty common my corgi used to do that & it REALLY
grossed me out! there are a couple of things you can do. First i would tap it on the mouth & say very sternly "no" when you find her eating it and maybe as a little extra punnishment lock her out for a while this worked on my corgi & he learned quickly that it was bad. if you still can't get her to stop there are some pills you can get from your vet or an online store to make the feces taste bad to the dog i have never tried them but it could be worth it just take some time to disipline & work with her & she will learn good luck!

Not unusual behavior for dogs, although it is rather unpleasant. She may have a dietary deficiency. Check with your vet to insure she is getting the nutrients she needs as a puppy. Change pads, or at least remove the poop so she can't eat it. Pick up the poop outside so she won't eat that either. Eventually she will catch on.

There is a product you can get at Petsmart, a food additive, that is supposed to make the feces taste bad (like it doesn't already) to make them not want to eat it. You may want to try that.

Its normal, my dog did it as a puppy too. You just need to train them that it's wrong, just like pooping in the house would be.

Dogs in the wild generally do this as well. The clean their den, by keeping it free of debris. And to hide their tracks...where theres poop there was a dog...to a wolf that is a dead give away to its food.
