I use Vonage, and it works great for me. It has saved me a TON of dough. But some people had trouble with it, and lost calls. One of my friends switched back after 6 months. He acutally saved lots of money while he had it, the phone would simply go dead during a call. I do not have this trouble.
My cable is almost never out. I added a cheap UPS that I bought at the local STAPLES store, for my Vonage adpater. My phone now stays up during power outtages.
But I have taken my phone and Vonage adapter with me on vacation. Last year, I spent two weeks in Hong Kong.. it worked great to call home for FREE. (The hotel charged $25 just to make the connection). This year, I took my phone to Boston... again, it worked great.
There are no hidden charges. Recently, they added the state sales tax to my bill. That's the law.
But I have used the referral system. I have gotten 6 months of totally FREE vonage by referring just 3 of my friends. So they are saving money too.

Yes. Thats why I still subscribe to plain old telephone service. The phone has been reliable ever since I could remember. Internet phone service is great as a second phone line for the kids or a small business line. But I would never replace my main phone with internet phone service.
Also, if you have a monitored alarm system, that can pose a challenge. Because if you switch over you will have to reconfigure your wiring for the alarm system to communicate in the event that you have an emergency.

Yes, your service goes off when cable goes out most of the time. I've lost cable during a storm but I still had phone service.

when the electricity, or the cable goes out...you don't have a phone....but, since most everyone has a cell these days......the cable phone for your home is a bargain.....
I mean...think....how often did the electricity or cable go out in your home last year? for how long?......
