there are a lot of plusses and minuses, costs and benefits...
I would say THE best thing is the sense of personal strength and discipline you (should) gain. As a manager I've done lots of job interviews, and I can tell you that ex-military just come across as more cognizant and stable individuals. They have a sense of organization and regimen, and a social fearlessness that really translates into real world success and serves people well throughout their lives. Combine that with the free college education you get, and I think it can be a real career-booster for someone.
On the flipside, while the experience strengthens some people, it can break others down, particularly if they experience combat. It's like Nietzsche said, that which does not kill you makes you stronger.

I can't say as I can really pinpoint just one thing. I get to fly a fighter from a moving ship that goes on 6 month deployments to almost every country in the world. I get to work with some of the most talented and dedicated people in the country. But I think one of, if not the best thing, is when I see a little kids eyes light up when they see my wings and want to ask questions about what I fly and how fast the plane goes. That gives me the satisfaction of knowing that perhaps one day, that child will think back to that meeting and decide he also wants to be a Naval aviator. It doesn't get any better than that.

This is me talking as a veteran who got out for the wrong reasons and my hubby who is still active duty and deployed: the camaraderie. It is the best thing in the world. Everyone misses that when they get out into the civilian world.
I'd say the pay, but civies get better. I'd say the benefits but some times they come with risks, like dead babies and such. So it has to be the sense of togetherness in it all.

The due respect that u get. May be there is not too much money in the forces, (if u r an Indian, in any case), but there is too much respect in the forces. No job has that much respect as the ppl from forces have.

Just pick one: travel, learning to be responsible, self-discovery, sheltered lifestyle, unlimited growth potential. I could go on, but you get the idea.
