well they are suppose to be OK but from my experience they don't always go back to the original spot and then sometimes they start leaking oil they have shocks behind the bump rail and they compress and suppose to go back to the original location the bumper will ride over the lower finder and depends on the car it can cause damage from the flap end sliding over the finder or what ever it slide over need to know the vehicle, and it would be a good idea from a mechanical stand point to put it on a hoist and have it looked over by a pro just to see if you went over the 5 mile an hour mark and you could have damaged depends how it was hit and where it was hit cause the test on the bumpers are in a lab test facility and ideal conditions and you could have something bend or leaking and might need to be fixed remember if over 5 and not in a testing format have it looked at ,

The bumpers and bumper covers are mounted to shock absorbers. There are two shock absorbers per bumper. They are designed to compress and release. In theory, there should be no damage to the car uni-body, the shocks or the bumper frame, in a crash under 5 mph. However, the plastic bumper cover will usually get torn or punctured.
In a crash over 5 mph, the shock absorbers will not return to the normal position and will stay compressed. They will then have to be replaced.

5mph bumpers are designed so that if you hit something at 5mph or less it will not damage the car. So you don't have to check anything if you are going 5mph or less, but if you are going faster it would be wise to have them checked out.
