If you know where he worked, try calling the company. Try various Internet searches if he won any awards for hobbies (e.g. Colorado Fly Fishing Competition, or something?) That's a long shot, but it might work... Or, if you have some spare cash you could try hiring a private investigator and set a price.

Ask anybody who might have known him and build a picture about where he might be. If you keep on asking you should get closer.
