Yet more problems with Windows "improvements" -- Goddam Microsoft and all that sail in her!
I disabled a couple of the extensions that semed to require daily updating, but after a month or so, Microsoft decided that my copy of Microsoft was "illegal", and now i get a bubble on the screen ever few minutes telling me that it might have been pirated, and for the bargain price of US$190 I can register it as a legit copy. Since I only rent this machine, I refuse to do that.

Right click the Automatic Updates service and stop it. You can also do the same thing at the command line by typing:
net stop wuauserv
After the service is stopped, the nag message stops, too. Then you can reboot when you have time. The service will restart when you reboot.

Control panel has icon for auto updates, but that is just for windows. For software, etc. you might have to right click and disable each instance.
