I am looking to begin playing guitar and while I don't want a piece of crud to start with, I don't want to spend billions of dollars, either. Can someone recommend a good guitar for a player who is just starting out- something sturdy that I can't destroy while I get the hang of this! :-)

Johnson is decent for a beginner and goes for around $100. Walmart has some good beginner guitars for around the same price. Also, get a Mel Bay chord book, and electronic tuner, and maybe a subscription to a music magazine that has guitar tab. Practice daily and have fun with it.

You didn't specify whether you wanted to learn electric or acoustic!

I'm not familiar with electric guitars so can't help you there. A good low-mid price acoustic guitar you might consider is an Alvarez. They have a nice, warm tone and easy action. If you're going with an acoustic, have the music store put light gauge strings on it before you start practicing.

To avoid getting blisters, rub alcohol on your fingertips after playing - this will help you to avoid the blisters and help your fingers 'callous' faster, making it easier to continue playing for longer periods of time without discomfort.

I began playing a Gibson Epiphone that was a gift but probably cost around $200 10 years ago. It was a decent instrument that with the correct strings could hold tune and sound very decent.

I have since upgraded to a couple Martin guitars. I record with a D-45 and play gigs with a DCX-1E.

Check the Musician's Friend website. They have a good selection with customer reviews that should help you.

Try Thomann, they're a German company and they have a good range of guitars at various prices---their stuff is good.

Buy a Juan Martinez. It's cheap and you might not ever have to buy another one.
