I can imagine that once a long while ago it was an advantage to believe in a God , you could be punished (here on earth ) for not believing.

Even if we are programmed by evolution to believe in a big space daddy that will take care of us, that doesn't make those beliefs true. There are many situations where our senses decieve us and we have to use logic and our other senses to understand the world.
