I am looking to buy a purebred dog. I would like a large breed, active but not super active, not REALLY long hair, friendly with other animals and strangers. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Anything but a pittbull or rottweiller! They should be restrained!

Great Dane, Beagle, Am. Staff, Ridgeback...the list is very long...
And please note : it is not a guarantee that you will "get a good dog" you need proper training, and extensive socializing for any dog, even a Golden Retriever, which are supposedly the "best".

I have had Am. Staffs my whole life and would never get any other breed. But everything is a personal opinion, such as this answer :) lol - Have a great day!! and GOOD LUCK!

P.S. I knew someone would say it!!!! HATE THE DEED NOT THE BREED! let me guess, the person above me thinks all black people are bad people, just because they take up most of our prisons???? OPEN YOUR MIND A BIT!

Alaskan Malamute. I have one and he's the most adorable dog ever! He's generally active, Has medium length hair and is very friendly with strangers and generally friendly with other animals.
They look a bit like huskies but are slightly larger and more stocky and fluffier.

Otherwise, a Labrador would brobably be the best alternative!

Do a google search on Alaskan Malamutes for more info.

If you start out with a puppy labs are great but you might want to go with a dog that will make you laugh and be the greatest family pet. The BOXER is a wonderful dog. I have owned about ten large breed dogs but none of them match the fun and adventure I have had with my boxer Budda.

In my opinion any dog can be a good dog such as like you describe if you put time into making them a good dog...If you are social then take your dog with you so that he is a friendly social animal. I recommend rotweilers as they are loyal and loving and well-mannered.
