A "regular income" career for artists would be teaching as a professor or teacher at a school in any of the art-y subjects.

Not brilliant for a budding career. My uncle is an artist and paints murals throughout London, as community projects, but it is certainly not a regular income or lucrative business. However, an alternative would be to become a freelance illustrator. You can go on the books of an agency such as Heart (www.heartagency.com), and you may get regular work from them.

Teaching is the answer. I take both my parents for example. Both of them are from fine arts background. My mom's an art teacher in high school and my dad's a lecturer in private university. So of course, lecturer/professor get higher regular income compared to teacher.
If you are an artist who can work independently, like the kind of person who likes to produce masterpiece and exhibiting it in public and yes, sell them, you can actually earn quite a few bucks, depending on where (exhibition place) and who (client). But from here, you have to start small...getting from a recognition to another. So you'll get famous by the time you get more stuff to write about yourself.
Nowadays, its good to be versatile. Get to know other stuff other than fine arts/graphics like photography, digital illustration, etc. From there, you have wider career choice or prospects.

I am making my life with art, fine art (Drawings, Paintings, etc.). Teaching is a good way to make stedy money, but it's important to make your own market in the art world. Make as many expos as you can, any size, anywhere!! Regular income comes from collectors that want to watch your career grow out of interest of the images you make or your personality. Check pout my site www.molonlabe.org . It's not easy but I have been doing it for 12 years now and I am going to be in the 2007 Florence Biennale, and I'm only 33! If your not familiar with the Biennale Check www.florencebiennale.org Good luck...Oh, by the way, have fun too! No dollar value, but priceless

You have to define your own niche area first. Do you want to be an illustrator, graphic designer or teach art?
If you have chosen to be an illustrator, you have to source for companies that buy illustrations, many companies buy illustrations on a regular basis, such as publishing or training companies that want to have their own materials done up professionally. You can start your own columns in newspapers or magazines or even sell your illustrations to many publications to get a regular income.
Alternatively, you can start a website to promote your illustrations and offer some ofthem on a royalty basis for other sites.
There are many options open to artists for regular income, you just heva to have confidence in your art and be patient, the money will follow.

I am a professional graphic artist and I have two words for you: Illustrator & Photoshop. With these two Adobe programs under your belt you can begin a great career as a designer for print, web, etc.
There are many other applications that will help you along, but these are usually the first two employers look for in graphic professionals.
Good Luck!!!
