the society at large has been mainly controlled by the ideas of the christian churches since the dark ages and beyond. They have been degrading women for that long. They did not for a long time see women as equal and therefore they needed protection. This came into things like the chastity belt long ago. They also were not trusted because women bleed. That was known as evil, women were even separated from men during this time. I think that all of this came down to what we have today with women needing to have more chastity than men. But it is now turned around a bit. to that a woman should be more virtuous.

I think this is almost a dead issue. We are living in times when fornication and the consequences of such are rampant, and as the saying goes "it takes two to tango", meaning that women had to be involved in most instances, so they're not that pure and innocent now, are they??

I don't think a woman's chastity is more important - they both are. It really comes down to values - how much to you value God, his rule on the matter, and your body? I'll tell you, it's definitely nice, a relief, priceless when they man you end up marrying is a virgin, too. Nothing can replace that!

If anything, I'd say it's even more important for a MAN to be a virgin, because let's face it, they're more likely than women to not be.

I believe you are not taking religion into this evaluation, since most religions advocate purity on both sides.

Speaking from a sociological perspective, I believe that the notion that chastity is more important for a female is the result of patriarchial views. Men wanted to subjugate women, and hence hoisted a lot of their views on society as "the norm" - that women should be virginal, should be educated only in the ways of the home (thank God that has changed), should be submissive in all and any of their roles in society, etc.

They also made known their views of themselves as right and just in society - that men should never be questioned by the "lesser" sex, that they have a right to sow wild oats, that women will always bear the shame for anything that they should actually share the blame for or even if it's the men's fault (think of children conceived out of wedlock, or even rape. The men should be the object of shame in the latter, for not being able to control their baser instincts, yet it is the woman who will become an outcast, and derided for being less than virtuous).

All these are concepts that men and women have been dealing with for a very long time, and I think will continue to deal with. I think education among women is one way we can change this way of thought. We need to believe that truly we are not lesser than the male, before we can fight their subjugations on any level.

What is the use of chastity anyway? In today's society, you may get married whilst a virgin, and then get divorced a couple of months later (happening too often). So you are no longer "pure" when you decide to marry again. it's of no use and hence comparison with male chastity no longer has any significance.

Way back in the "dark ages" its importance was because a man's sons were so important to his bloodline. (not the daughters of course, but thats another story!!)

He had to be absolutely sure that his woman's children were his, so chastity was a way of guaranteeing that no one else had been there - so to speak VBG, and also that no-one had contaminated his possession, which is how women were regarded..

Nowadays of couse, in some societies and religions, its a way of controlling and keeping women on the low level it is believed they belong.

nowadays if u luk arnd in fact CHASTITY doesn't matter at all for many, especially in advanced western countries, the ppl of which think they're too 'MODERN'
But i firmly believe that VIRGINITY has its own significance....I'm a virgin n will be till marriage
when the question comes 2 MALES n FEMALES, yes female chastity is considered more (i don't know y)......and that's so unfair
i think god has been biased (if u believe he made u) just look.....females once they hav sex, hav a broken hymen(unless u get a repair surgery) as a sign, what is there 2 judge a guy whether hez had it all or not???
also....males hav one damn openin 4 two things while we have two separate ones 4 sex n urine(mite sound absurd)

It's a double standard. A man who has lots of sex is a stud. A woman who has lots of sex is a slutt. It's an idea that 's left over from the Victorian era, when sex was a horrid thing not to be discussed in public.

Also, this country was founded by Puritans, and many of their puritanical ideas about sex still remain. The United States is one of the most backward countries when it comes to sex, but at least we don't have the monstrosity of female circumcision like those god-forsaken third-world hellholes.
