Been there, it was hell. The whole place was infested. Firstly, start with the cat. Go to your vet and get a product called Frontline. Its a six month supply (aroun £20) and you apply it by breaking the seal on the individual sachets once a month, you just part the hair at the back of the neck, where the cat can't lick it off and it kills fleas, ticks and lice. IN 24 HOURS!!!! It really, really works. Also, it protects them for the whole month, killing any hatching eggs and new parasites, keeping puss clean, your home clean and you unbitten. I tried every flea product going, including flea baths, this stuff really works. Don't be tempted to use the supermarket versions, they simply don't work.
Next, to deal with the home you should also speak to your vet, who should be able to supply a strong enough spray to kill any life fleas (they can live up to a year in carpet) and possibly eggs too. If the infestation is really bad and doesn't go, I suggest calling a pest controller.
When my two cats were infested, the carpet was so bad, you could see the fleas jumping around, a vet's spray sorted that out nicely and we hoovered like mad for several weeks, however, after treating both cats with frontline spot-on cat, they vanished. Can't praise the stuff enough. Good luck!

I have just had a similar problem with a dog and it has taken about 4 weeks to get the infestation under control. You will have to keep spraying your house and treating your cat (flea bath, spray, stay on drops or injection from the vet). the best stuff to use is frontline from the vets. For an infestation that bad a collar will not be enough.
Make sure you are hoovering every where the cat goes including furniture and bedding. the little buggers get everywhere.

Advantage is a flea treatment where you place on the back of your cats neck, with 24 hrs the fleas are all dead and your cat is protected for 30 days. It costs about $15- $30 CAN depending where you get it from. You can get imitations from the pet shop, but the vet has the real stuff.
You'll also have to thoroughly vacuum everywhere to get rid of the ones that are around. Beds, couches carpets those little buggers get in to everything.
Check out this web site for more info.

Don't use flea bathes, flea bombs in your house, Hartz products that are for fleas, or any flea meds you can buy from the store. All you need is a Capstar and then 3 days later place Advantage on your cat once a month. Capstar is a pill that your cat swallows and kills any fleas that are on your cat now and only works for 24-36 hrs. Advantage will kill all fleas that jumps on your cat and eliminates the fleas around the house. Everything else will get you sick and your cat sick. Also flea collars don't do a thing to protect your cat from fleas.

Ring your local council for pest control advice, they will know how to deal with major flea infestations. Change the hoover bag or bin after every session and then put down the flea powder, especially at the edges of the room. Be careful with flea collars, chemicals can affect some cats.

Any infestation of this kind is almost impossible to eradicate if you do it piecemeal.
You need to fumigate your house, get a 'bomb' from housewares/supermarket (one per room).
Wash the family and the furry pets in treatment shampoo.
If you have a baby consult GP and do a thorough check yourself for bites or creatures.
Treat any birds/reptiles with appropriate body drops.
Arrange a nice picnic with the children and pets, then close all windows and doors and set the 'bombs' off.
I would recommend someone coming back after 6 hrs to open the doors and windows and leaving for another 6hrs.
But following the instructions on the 'bomb' is enough.
Everything smaller than your hand in the house will die.
Then normal cleaning and flea collars should be enough.

your cat is catching them from the house now . fleas can live dormant in sofas , carpets for years and this hot weather is hatching them out .
you need to go and get some special powder for your furniture and cover the furnishings and house with it and leave for a few hours , i had the same problem once and it was that bad when i put my cup of tea on the carpet they all jumped towards it , you could use boiling water in a bowl to see the extent of the damage , and how many you have !
the powder works but cant remember the name , you just hoover it up , we left our all day . also get the flea treatment called in line or on line from your vet its a small sachet with a nozzle and you put it at the back of their necks its the best . just remembered called front line . its the best one available .
you will never get rid just hoovering we found the powder at our local m.s.f. or equivalent farm and pet store . good luck .

Have you tried giving her a flea bath? This will eliminate them from the cat, but if they are in your carpet, there isnt anything to stop the cat getting them again.
The best thing for the carpets is to vaccuum obsessively until you no longer notice them. Also use the little flea pesticide bombs that you can set off in your home. You just have to do it while you are away. That's how we got rid of my cat's fleas.
